My dad would like to sell his 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera convertible however we are not sure how to price it bc we can't find any out there with 237k+ miles? It still runs great and is in excellent condition. Im curious, how many miles will a 911 get before needing a major engine rebuild and how much would that cost? Any idea how to price the car?

Are you saying that the engine has never been rebuilt? I would be surprised and if not, it will probably need one. A full recon is upwards of 10k. Top end only is about 3k.

The value of the car will depend on many other factors and especially the condition of the body. Could be anywhere between 15k and 30k.

Rust is the biggest factor on these cars. Are there any visible signs of corrosion around the door shut and rear sill areas?
After all those miles of water and mud blasting the kidney bowl and front inner wings, that is probably also where attention will be needed.

Nope- the engine has never been rebuilt. The car still looks new on the inside and out and runs great. My dad treated it with white gloves- wiped it down after every drive and covered in and stored in the garage. He did get new leather seats once the leather wore down and a new top. He kept it maintenance regularly. I have seen were they can go 300k and even one that went 500k miles. We just don't know where to start with listing to sell it and what to list it at. There are no signs of rusting or corrosion.

How can you tell when an engine needs a rebuild? It still runs great. Do you rebuild if there are no issues?

I'd say £25k for that car. Looks in very good condition.

I would hesitate to offer a value until I knew where abouts in the world that you are in. And when I do find out, I probably wouldn't know the local Porsche market anyway.. ..but someone here might, and be able to offer advice then.

biggrin

They are pretty bulletprooof and dont really break but what happens is general wear and you lose power. It happens gradually so you wouldnt notice. A compression test would tell you.

Is it tappetty at all? Its likely to be.

Its almost impossible for us to value it on a picture and a few comments, it would have to be inspected thoroughly. There are so many areas that need considering.

Issues or not people, are going to expect work like that to have been done already.

As the next owner, will be thinking that bill will be next for the car.

We all know that work is not cheap, hence being overlooked by many owners as well.

Also other work overlooked by many owners are shocks, bushes, oil pipes, brakes to name a few.
You could get the bores tested etc?

Goodluck.

I know of a 3.2 that had covered 240k miles and still ran sweet, in fact it had done massive amounts of trips to the Ring and its last was at near the 240k mark and then it was sold back in 2005 for a new 997. Leaked a little oil by then mind

I really think full service history and careful running from cold is the answer to an aircooled engine and its service life.

Skip Trammell has been the one to service it for the entire 25 years we have owned it. He studied under Franz Blam for years before going out on his own to focus on Porsches. I am taking it to him this wk to look over again and help with pricing and recommendation for any work needed. we have not had the engine rebuilt (upper block- piston rings, valves, eceter) because Skip has evauated for this when each 15,000 mile service is performed and he has said that if the engine is not burning oil, the compression is good it is not needed. His recommendation when I asked when should I expect to get the engine rebuilt was- with the way you drive, not hot dogging or competitive racing, You should drive until it stops. It may go more than 300,000 miles on that paticular engine.
We are in Knoxville, TN and Im sure the market for it won't be here- it will be elsewhere so we will have to post to sell it nationally. I just want it to end up in the hands of someone who will love and treat this car well. My dad sat in it for 2 hours with tears when he left it yesterday. Its a special car.

Sweet looking car. But, why wouldn't the best market be in the US?

Have you raised the question on Rennlist?

European prices might be higher, but the cost of shipping and duty would probably outweigh the benefit.

Good luck
