When new, in the UK they came with Panasonic radio cassete. Bloody good sound as I remember.

Have a look on www.bergvillfx.com. There are two Continental units that look sufficiently retro that they will not look out of place in a 1983 Porsche. Plus all the latest features you could want. I think you cam also buy them as VDO branded from other sellers.

I have just had an Alpine CDE178 fitted to my car to replace an older Alpine unit. Not period correct but inoffensive and sounds great.

Speakers are well worth upgrading too; I had existing DLS components in the doors and DLS 4" fills in the rear (all behind stock grilles) with a little Pioneer Sub in the footwell.

I enquired about one of these this morning at Porsche Leeds. £758+VAT. Expensive, but I've almost convinced myself it's worth it.

That's bonkers compared to the Alpine at 200

I'm afraid I have to agree! I paid £375 for the Alpine HU and KTP-445A fitted (incl. VAT).

For the £910 that the Porsche unit is, you could add some rather nice speakers and a sub as well.

Whenever I see a modern headunit fitted in one of these cars they stick out like a sore thumb. Becker units tend to look better than most, but you struggle to find one cheaper than £500. May as well go the whole hog and get one that not only suits the interior perfectly, but has full sat-nav functionality too. It's about the same price as a top spec iPhone. As a % of the total spend my full rebuild it's tiny.

So stop bksing up my man maths!

Whilst not wildly helpful to your man-maths, I have heard it said elsewhere that the Porsche units may not sound as good as some other aftermarket units.

I appreciate the desire for navigation; whilst not wildly pretty, I think a phone in a cradle bluetoothed to a HU is easier to see than little nav at knee height.

No idea if the latest Porsche Classic is the same, but the original version didn't look that good. It stuck out quite a way and the screen is so small that using it as a nav is probably dangerous given where it sits. At £900 it is taking the piss something chronic.

If you need navigation, just download the Tom Tom app onto your smart phone and use a Kenu airframe mount so that you can position it discretely near the centre vent. None of the inbuilt nav systems is going to come close to the Tom Tom in terms of accuracy and functionality, plus you end up with the nav screen in the wrong place.

My new HU and amp install was done by Brian Car Sounds in Coulsdon. Speakers and sub were already in but they were very reasonable and did the install very tidily.

I could have fitted myself....but not that neatly and without many hours of swearing.

i have a VDO unit available for sale if anyone is interested - amber backlight, ISO connectors - bought from a PH'er last month, but have since picked up a retro becker for nearly 3 times the amount.

70gbp posted - looks minty, apparently only fitted by PO for 2m, sold as it didnt have DAB.

I did, it was in a car that I bought and have since sold. I struggled with the usability of the screen, I'm conditioned to having something larger with a map position. Lacking the context of the map was a bit of a pain. Audio wise, I can't say it was better or worse than anything else I've used. I generally prefer to listen to the engine.
