Evening All,

I'm after some clarification if I may, before I go mad :

My understanding is that the Mk 1 Chimps only have a speed sensor / transducer housed in the gearbox. I've found this and changed it as part of getting my speedo to work.

I've now been googling and a bit confused as I've read somewhere that early Griffiths with the GKN diff had a speed sensor on the nose of the diff. I'm now thinking does that apply to the chimps as well and as such should i have a second speed sensor on the Diff ?
dv t
I have jacked the back of the car up and looking from underneath I can see the nose of the diff and the toothed wheel but i can't see any sensor to the side of it ?

All help appreciated as having changed the gear box speed transducer and speedo I still do not have a working speedo . Surely it can't be this difficult.

Many Thanks

Jeremy

If you have a Speed Sensor on the diff, this is where it is mounted

But what you are looking at is one of the replacements that I can supply at a fraction of the dealer price, hence the splice because you have to reuse your original connector. I used to have an ad in the classifieds, but it lapsed.

Also worth mentioning that they are much more sensitive that the original, so the gap can be as much as 1mm, rather than a paper's width. This much reduces the chance of contact which destroys the sensor in short order. May not be an issue with a brand new diff, but for the rest of us where there can be significant run-out it helps a lot.

Early Chimaeras with the GKN diff and LT77 gearbox have 2 sensors. The one in the gearbox just supplies the ECU with a signal to control the idle. (it tells the ECU if the car is moving or not) There is one located above the propshaft at the diff end which provides a signal for the speedo. Changing it is a faff as it's awkward to get at. You will need to drop the exhaust to make access easier. HTH

sensor for the GKN diff is located above the nose of the diff, to access remove drivers side rear wheel, you can reach in, wires should just pull off as they are bullet type connector direct to sensor, you can squeeze in an adjustable spanner to remove sensor from bracket

cheers All,

Have found the b*gger ! Nestled on top of the nose of the diff. Only issue now is that I can't seem to pull the wires off frown So have applied the WD40 and will go back and have another go later today.

Can I ask, are the wires specific to a terminal ? Before I wiggle them off, it would be good to mark them if that is the case.

Many Thanks

Jeremy

Hi
there was a cross over period where the GKN diff was used with cai gauges(silver rims).
In this case the sender is different and the wires are part of the sender, follow the wires there should be a 2 pin plug.

hi all, apologies for the further request for help but here goes :

I've found the speed sensor and can see it clearly and can get to the connecting wires. It has two wires with what look like blue bullet or spade connectors as the sensor end. My sensor looks like this with what seems a wire with a yellow stripe feeding it and a black wire going to it:

and not the later type which is longer in the body and has a single point of entry into the sensor. My car is a 1993 4.3 with black dials.

My problem is however hard I wiggle the ends of the wire I can't shift them one bit. I've gone in through the wheel arch and wiggled with thin nose pliers, I've reached up from below and wiggled them by hand and no budging what so ever. I've checked if there is a connector block in or around the area above the diff and i can't see one and I can see the cable as far back where it drops down into the space above the exhaust plate.

Am I missing something ? are the wire terminals glued / soldered on ? From the pic of the replacement item it looks like a spade connection which should come lose pretty easily.

I'm thinking the next step is to snip the wires as close to the end of the sensor as possible to allow me whatever flex is available and then make up some new tails for the existing sensor when it is cleaned and re-fitted or for the replacement one if the original is knackered.

Second point if I may, is there somewhere that does replacement sensors for a more reasonable price than the usual suspects and/or is an aftermarket product that is more sensitive and allows for a greater gap to be used. I know there is for the later type sensors, but obviously that won't fit my car.

Many Thanks as always.

Jeremy

Many of the sensors had the wires going into the sensor body and bonded in place. Are you sure yours actually have spade terminals?
