I'm getting battered with some spam at the moment that is quite obviously from the same source but they cleverly bounce it off legitimate and unsuspecting mail servers.

Its always in the same format. It will be from a "Constant L. Electric" or "Occupation S. Fruit" i.e. two random words seperated by an initial. Usual titles "Mom wants to feck you hard", "Girl shoots milk from her pussy", usual sort of stuff.

The email is then a load of philosophical waffle made up from random famous (and not so famous) quotations. e.g. "Rolling stones gather no moss but its better to be a poor man in heaven than a rich man in hell."

Oh , and the oblogatory naked girl picture.

Just wondered if anyone is getting the same and if you've traced it, stopped it, whatever?

Spam is spam is spam. Tracing is usually pointless these days, it'll be from a zombie PC or an ISP that doesn't care and doesn't reply to email (Oh, how I long for the Old Days when sysadmins Had Clue and a Big Stick). The only solution in the short term is filtering of some kind, and in that case the world is your lobster, since there are more spam filtering systems than you can shake a stick at. I liks assp, others like SpamAssasin - have a Google round.

Im getting the same sorts of e-mails, its getting to be about 15 a day now which is a complete waste of time, only started happening the last few weeks.

I remember something that was discussed on here that actually has a go back at the spammer but cant find the link or remember what it was called, any ideas

Just get a filter. The best way is to use an ISP that filters *for you* with Brightmail or similar. Demon do this and it is GREAT! (Virtually no spam. Perhaps a single mail every week or two - not more than that.)

If you don't want to change ISP then I have found Sunbelt Software's iHateSpam package to be cheap and effective. It deletes about 90% of the crap - the remaining 10% is easily deleted using the Mk1 Eyeball.

If I had kids I wished to protect...I'd change to an ISP that did it on the server before it could be seen.

Simplest method I've found is to use 2 email addresses - 1 if you need to register on any sites etc and one for legit stuff (friends, family, work etc).

From home, I only download mail (POP3) from my legit account... the free one used for registering can fill with as much spam as it wants - I just go online and delete all emails every month or two!

My legit account has not has a single piece of spam in over 2 years.

(I know that the ISP for the legit email account could be filtering the spam, but they are both free web-based mail accounts and the first account is full of spam (around 200 a month!)

Neil, the spam you're getting is what prompted me to post This
I've gone with Teds suggestion, and downloaded the trial version, it has killed everything so far.
I had tried messing about with outlook message rules etc etc,but it was very difficult to find words that worked all the time. I've turned all the message rules off now, and so far, no spam.

Edit to add: cotty, the thing you're on about was called "make love not spam". As far as I'm aware, it's been stopped because it might be illegal. IIRC it used to ping known spam servers, in what was basically a DDoS attack. Bloody good idea if you ask me !
