My car is getting a bit squeaky when its cold, sounds like the well known problem with the tensioner pulley ( http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=119... ) - anyone off an opinion as to whether this is a dealer/specialist thing to get done or can my local (trusted) garage do it easily enough?

It's cheap even at the dealers, so I'm not fussed about the cost, but it's massively more convenient for me to use a local place for minor jobs.

When I had mine done it was about £80 parts and an hours labour. However the dealer I tried to get it done at came out with a list of other "essential" maintenance I should have done as well. Went in for £150 of work and got a £3500 quote.

So I went elsewhere to a friendly specialist, paid an hours labour

Anyone could do it, so long as you have the workshop manual for torque settings etc

It happened on mine. I bought some Halfords pulley lube, used it a few times and it disappeared. Will get the mod done n next service but the spray method works in my case.

Interesting.. Is it easy to get at? Service is due end of July so it can wait until then if I can shut it up in the meantime smile

Rick at Derby Motor Services (no more alas) recommended sprinkling talc powder on the belt. Worked for me, though best not to use a scented product, particularly one aimed at senior citizens!
