So, the new VED rules 2017 and Kit Cars
Discussion
Almost there in pressing the button on a Westfield S2000 build at the moment. Just gaining information on the effect of the new VED rules for kitcars registered after 1st March 2017 , as by the time I get a kit and build it and register for its IVA , is going to cut it fine for the deadline, so wondering if people know of the implications of being after the date ?

I suspect, as IVA'd kit cars don't have a CO g/km figure, the existing system of VED based on engine size that operates now for kits will continue. None of the info I can find is very detailed other than the headline figures.
That would sound reasonable - but does anyone know the real proposal if it's a kit conversion - I guess with a new build eg Westfield of Caterham with all new bits the rules will apply. With a kit conversion (even if granted an age-related reg) there is a new ie 2016 date of first registration. This can give some funny interpretations, eg for my 2009 registered car (some parts 1987) RAC will not give cover because it's an old E reg - I wonder what their stance is on pre-suffix/prefix personal plated cars?

Why not give Westfield a ring and ask them? as their business may be affected they will more than likely have the answer.
I did give them a call and they advised that the car is registered as a PLG and not a particular G/km rating. As to the affect from March 1st, they couldn't tell me, but suspect it shouldn't change and cost anything but weren't 100% on that currently. Guess the government haven't worked that out for everyone to know yet then !!VED based on emissions can only be done on a type approved vehicle and after extensive testing and proving. As you will know this is done on each model so the same engine could be in a different band depending which model car it is fitted too.
If you take that engine and put it in a kitcar they have no way of knowing what figure to use. That is how it is now and they class it PLG. I can't see how they could do anything else than what they are doing now apart from perhaps changing the CC bands or splitting Carbs from EFI.

We were looking at putting a private plate on it to be honest, so neither really. Just don't want to be stung with a big VED from March 1st next year if I don't get it built in time.
Private plate would be added after - you would (as I understand) be issued a Q plate, age related (e.g. E) or new (e.g. 17) depending on how you register/build it.Mattt said:

This a complete brand new kit from the factory bar the engine and box. I am looking at a new reg rather than a Q, as that is a car which is an unrecognisable age parts construction or identity IIRC.

For a new plate only one assembly can be 'used' but even then you may need to demonstrate via invoices that it has been rebuilt to an 'as new condition' so just putting plugs and points in the engine will not cut it.http://westfield-sportscars.co.uk/showroom-brochur...
