Sounds a bit like a scam to me but have today put on a vehicle for spares / repair and within an hour of it going live had a phone call off a chap seeming very interested, he said how much do you want, I said probably around £5-600, he then said he'd give me £600 for it and he'd send the money via bank transfer, now how much can someone scam you by having your sort code and account number?

Just tell him to bring cash when he takes the car - and check the notes carefully!

He hasn't looked at your vehicle. You intimated £500 might be acceptable and he offered £600.

Cash on collection is the answer here. Doubt you will see him or the money.

When is a door not a door? When it's ajar.

When is a scam not a scam? When it's cash on collection.

bank transfer pretty safe, don't take paypal though.as he can take money back after he bought car on paypal,up to 30 days later!
though £600 cash in hand be better.

Bank transfer is better as you have the cleared agreed sum before he arrives, with cash he will definitely try to bargain.
I don't know of any reason why giving someone your bank details can lead to fraud. Maybe there are some bankers on here that know better?

Bank transfers are not safe. They can be revoked a number of weeks after the transfer if there is confirmed fraud - which there will be in the case of a scammer.

Cash on collection.

And then make sure it's real cash.

But how do you know that the transfer came for a legitimate account?
ie. Suppose I discover that someone has hacked my account and transferred the money to you. My bank will endevour to reclaim the the money from your account.
