Ceiling speakers advice
Discussion
Hi, I'm putting ceiling speakers in two rooms in my house. Kitchen/dinner and orangery. I'm going to connect each pair of speakers to a separate sonos amp. My budget is around £300 per pair of speakers. Looking at other forums, monitor audio cwt180 seem recommended. I have very little knowledge of speakers so would appreciate some advice or suggestions if these would be a good option or would you recommend a different speaker?
Thanks
Thanks
I have two pairs of Monitor Audio ceiling speakers powered by two Sonos Connect Amps. Kitchen and bathroom.
Mine are 6" ones with enclosed backs CP-CT260's. I've been very impressed with them.
I chose the enclosed back ones because they leak far less noise into the rooms above. I also think it's better if the manufacturer designs the enclosure rather than it being a random amount of void space.
The Sonos Amps have no trouble driving them to anti-social volume levels (I often find myself having my own little disco while chopping veg) but if I did it again I'd probably cough up that bit extra for 8" ones for the extra bass.

Maybe I've missed something but could car audio speakers be used in place of celling speakers? I can't see much difference in them apart from them being significantly cheaper particularly if you're using them for background music
You can buy cheap ceiling speakers, mine were £20 a pair on eBay, the sound quality isn't quite as good as from my 'proper' system, but it's more than good enough. I can't see why using cheap car speakers would be any different, though I would presume they would tend to be black rather than the white that tends to go with most ceiling colours. I have used the Monitor Audio Pro-IC80 throughout my place and they sound great if not just a little bass light but I guess this is always the case with ceiling speakers. I think these are only available in a pack of 10 but good value if you were needing that many.
As an alternative to Sonos which is really expensive you could consider getting a multi-channel amp (I've used the Apart Revamp 1680) and then Gramofon's for each room, this is a much cheaper option than a Sonos for each channel as the Gramofon's are only £35 each and sound really good. With these you can use them with Spotify, Napster etc and control the whole house just like Sonos by grouping rooms or playing different sources in each room however its probably not quite as slick as Sonos but not bad considering the savings.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Think Ill plump for the 8" as the Monitor Audio ones are only an extra £30 per speaker and id rather not be in a situation where I regret going for the smaller ones. I'm also planning on getting the Sonos playbar, sub and two play 1's for a 5.1 set up in the living room. Anyone else got this set up for surround? I've heard very good reviews on the WWW.
I have a big Denon AV amp and a 5.1 set of KEF speakers for TV viewing with a Sonos Connect connected to an Aux-In on the Amp integrate it with Sonos. Total up the cost of the playbar, sub, play 1's and see what you can get for similar cost using traditional wired equipment.
Its an inconvenience having to turn the amp on and select the input as extra steps that are not required if you stall all Sonos but with a universal remote its not too bad.

Not had to use them to be honest, have used KEF and the new Sonance ones as well.
Should be able to get you demo Monitor Audio's if you want to try a pair, I have a direct account.
Personally I am going with Sonance in our build, but undecided on the cinema set up. Deffinately Atmosand the Sonance Sub box has gone in already.
