2 Weeks ago I stubbed my toe. Hopped around a bit, but not too bad, Mrs PR thinks I broke it, I wasn't so sure. I could manipulate it without much pain, just very tender and bruised. I carried on pretty much as normal, energetic daily 2hr dog walks that kind of thing, the tenderness subsided after the 1st mile anyway.

A week ago the swelling hadn't gone down although the bruising had. So I thought I better rest it for a bit, no dog walking and trying to stay off it as much as possible. So after a weeks rest and strapping it up during the day, it's still swollen and painful.

Thought I'd try a dog walk and wish I hadn't, short cut home and only managed 3 miles or so. Anyway the things very painful and swollen now. NHS website say's don't bother us with broken toes, they'll fix themselves eventually. I know (from previous breaks) that bones take 6 weeks to knit. I don't have to stay immobile for 6 weeks surely? The pain and swelling are worse than when it 1st happened.

Any ideas how I should proceed?

I broke my little toe and the one next to it when I accidentally kicked the end a door whilst walking through.

Mines were swollen for a few weeks but I think the trick is to keep them taped as the movements going to slow down the healing.

Weird thing is even after a few years if I get a cold or I'm ill they start throbbing!

I've always wondered how we don't break our toes more often; I've seriously hurt myself with toe stubbing in the past, had some proper wacks and yet you get the sharp pain for a few moments then it stops and all back to normal; toes are seriously hard core.

Yep, did that a few years ago.

"I think I have broken my toe" I said to my wife. "Don't be stupid" she said. Then she saw my toe sticking out at right angles from my foot...

I went to A&E who X rayed it, confirmed it was broken and needed to be reset.

The doctor told me he would need to give me a painkilling injection in the toe before they reset it but the injection "would hurt a lot".

It did.

A few weeks hopping round with my foot strapped up and it fixed itself.

Probably isn't, however, trauma can provoke a gout attack.

I have wondered this. I actually checked my toes the other day after wondering about it because at the end of last year I fractured a finger when a ball hit it and it had to be splinted up. I mean, balls are soft compared to chair legs!

Did mine, had a bath before going to A&E and accidentally reset it so I just taped it to it's neighbour and let it heal. Six weeks minimum, probably be sore a bit longer...

I fractured my big toe 3 weeks ago playing football (first game in 8 years and I boot the floor within the first 5 minutes).

Still taped up and still hobbling. I can just about drive without too much pain. One thing I will admit is I never realised the importance the big toe has for your balance.

I can expect another 3 weeks healing time.

Bugger.

Oh god no, I would rather stub my toe; I'm a bit of a nightmare as I hate having things on my feet, I just prefer to be barefoot, obviously if I'm out I wear suitable shoes but as soon as I'm home off come the shoes and socks.

Sensible slippers? Surely kerazy slippers are better providing more padding? http://amzn.to/1QjANvC

Slippers and gardening clogs it is. biggrin

I managed about a 1.5 miles to day with some old comfy shoes on. Borrowed a walking stick so I'll be practising proper old fart stuff. wink
