Can anyone offer advice?

My elderly brother has a 1997 Skoda Felicia in very good condition and which passed the MOT only this week.

It runs superbly, starts "on the button" and ticks over like the proverbial sewing machine.

However, there is one problem. when slowing to rest in traffic or a road junction etc., it just cuts out on the over-run - but can be readily be started on the key.

What might it be, before I wegive shed-loads of money to the stealers?

Is it petrol or diesel, what capacity, and is it single point or multi point injection if petrol ?

Oh sorry - my error!

I should have said it is a 1.3 petrol, with multi-point fuel injection.

There is a control valve on the inlet manifold / throttle body which is responsible for metering air intake at idle. It relies on info from a few sensors to work- Mass Air Flow (MAF) mainly but the throttle position sensor and coolant temperature sensor can cause similar symptoms.

The first diagnostic experiment is to see if the same symptoms occur if you unplug the MAF sensor.

Try cleaning the throttle body (aka throttle plate, throttle butterfly)if it has one.
