Anyone know what's up with my thumbnails?

Evening all,
This is my right thumbnail...
The left is similar, but nothing like as bad. It's not particularly painful or anything, but I suspect it will become so if it keeps getting worse! I asked a chemist today, but she had no idea, beyond thinking it might be some sort of infection, but if that's the case, I have to wonder how come it's on my thumbs on both hands, but not on any of my fingers.
Anyone got any ideas before I go through the hassle of booking a GP's appointment?

The picture isn't great so hard to say.
It could be anything from trauma to the nail bed to a touch of psoriasis, to cancer, to kidney failure or heart failure but will very very likely be completely benign and nothing to fret about.
Have you had any recent episodes of illness? That can sometimes leave ridges in your nails that appear just after and then slowly grow out.
I'd take a good quality pic and then check back in 4-6 weeks and compare the pic to your nail, if it looks to be growing out then happy days. If not and your are concerned then go see your gp. Unless they have a special interest in dermatology they likely won't know what it is though, you'll need a specialist dermatology referral.

tting my thumb gets at work is hitting the space bar on a keyboard, and it's several years at least since I've ttted them for pleasure!
I'll see if I get time to set up my macro kit on a tripod this evening for a much better photo.

I would be willing to bet that you pick at the skin at the base of your nails, consciously, or you may not even realise you're doing it. I've picked at my thumbs for years & the nails are exactly like yours. They've never been sore, just not particularly pretty.
I leave all the other fingers alone & the nails are fine.
