Seems all the advice here on changing engine mounts tell you to use the manifolds as a guide for the correct height (finger thickness?)

As I have the front suspension off and the manifolds out it seems a good opportunity to use the access I now have to change my engine mounts.

How do you set the correct position of the mounts without the manifolds on? I would have thought those who have dropped the block on an empty chassis must have something to work to.

Having changed my mounts I actually found it difficult to set the engine higher than the manifold set point. I would have thought if you get no other advice that setting it as high as yoj can and keeping it even won't befar off right

ETA my mounts didn't have any spacers, that could account for my difficulty gaining extra engine height

Yeah, as high as you can because they will sag a little in time.

So if I have understood correctly, put them on, push the engine up as high as it goes, and then tighten?

Is there also any play left to right or is the position more or less centred as soon as you tighten everything up?

How much play is there vertically?

I am planning to take off the whole bracket, does this make this easier?

Finished this the other day and having no suspension in the way was a bonus.

Taking it all out and changing the mounts was very easy. One of the mounts was cut in half!.

I spent ages though on one side putting the mount bracket back on even with ratchet spanners it was a very slow process, especially when somehow I managed to strip one of the threads and had to take it all off, with the full mounting bracket, fix the thread and then try and get that damned braket back on, which with the mount in the way makes doing up the bolt behind the mount impossible to do up with the mount on.
