I'm a luddite. I know this, but can someone help me with a question...

My daughter is getting an Xbox for her birthday (8th) however, I'm a little stumped as to what Xbox live is - I've worked out that it's to identify you/her as a gamer, but my ex wants to get her a voucher for it - what could my daughter use it for - she'd only really be playing Minecraft and its story edition - and my son (4) would get some driving game too.

So in short - what are the vouchers for?

Thanks

JTW

XBox Live is free, so she wont need Gold to play Minecraft etc. Gold is the paid thing, where you get to play online against others, get free games, and get to use some Apps like the Sky one.

So, probably not needed, but might increase your enjoyment of it smile

Ahh, right - so does she need Gold if she wanted to play Minecraft with friends?

Xbox live is just an account to log in to Microsoft doesn't really get you much, the vouchers pay for Xbox live gold which includes free game downloads (you just download them, then delete if you don't want to play it, this registers that you have it in your library and you can access it as you please later). There are also some games which are online only multiplayer, (plants vs zombies garden warfare which my kids love) minecraft you can play offline but my kids have more fun interacting with their cousins & friends all in one world. So basically, if the game requires Xbox live gold for online access you will need it, but it depends on the game (it should tell you in the blurb). Don't pay on the Xbox it's too expensive, buy online (I use eBay) and enter the code. Between £20-30 will get you 12 months depending on what offers are around.

A PHer friend gave me an Xbox for her so it's kids games all the way!

Is ebay a legitimate place to get a code?

Yes, make sure the seller has a good rating. I've used it the last 2 years no problems.

My kids disappear into the games room for hours now...

"Stop blowing my stuff up..."

"Don't take the stuff out of my chest..."

"I built that, go and find your own..."

Say goodbye to your daughter now lol, although it's nice to chill with a beer and play split screen with them, make sure you are in creative mode if you don't want to be killed and just want to build stuff. You can log in as a guest and both connect through one Xbox live account using split screen.

They both have tablets already so this is already a regular occurence - My 4 year old knows more about Minecraft than I do...

I spent over an hour recreating our house in minecraft, it's like Lego and you can really get into it. Then my nephew logged in and thought it was hilarious to go around bricking up the windows (admittedly it was quite funny)...could have been worse he could have just tnt'd the whole thing.

My 4 year old has built some pretty impressive things, houses, bridges, boats - He can't draw, but he can do that smile

He also loves Lego (as do I) so that helps - I don't get all the potions, what you use to grow a tree (sapling and bonemeal) and all the rest of it so I build a house/roof/rollercoaster and I'm impressed whereas the kids have built massive functioning structures and what I've done is st in comparison.

God I'm old....

I just clicked on the link and it takes you to cdkeys, but the price in the cart is £31.90 ... there must be a voucher code or something I'm missing

Just Google the gold membership, there are always cheap deals appearing on reputable sites, so you don't have to risk buying off some eBay dodgepot who has already cashed their code.
