Passed a camera sited in the middle of an uphill dual carriageway section, which I presume was created to allow safe overtaking ... returning a few days later I saw that the camera had been torched

Further west, on a clear, modern dual carrigeway an officer was using the width of a concrete flyover bridge to shield himself from observation, and targeting the rear of vehicles with a mobile laser

This siting of static and mobile units does not appear aimed at hazard reduction

I presume this is the camera west of Chicklade (at Devils Batch).

I have always found myself to be passing high-sided vehicles when proceeding up the hill past the camera.

Not, of course, that such a potentially fortuitous situation would ever have been exploited so as to exceed the speed limit and beat the line of traffic to the top of the hill and the end of the two-lane section. Oh, no!

I got collared on that one the first weekend it was put up (1999). I`m pretty sure that the TVR that was up my chuff at the time also got done!

How marvellous that it`s been torched - in my view it is one of the most cynical camera spots you could ever imagine. It is actively dangerous - short, steep uphill dual carriageway in the middle of a single lane section of the A303. You change down to get past the crawling artic`, accelerate, see the camera, brake, then run out of rev`s just as the dual carriageway ends over the brow. You are then left wheezing along, in the middle of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

Superb "safety" camera...

Ah yes. I know this stretch. Its single one way and dual up the hill.

BE WARNED. The speed limit up this hill is 60mph as there is no armco between the two lanes uphill and single down.

Someone was very probably rather angry when 10%+2 (68mph) was enough to nick them doing what they thought to be a legal 70mph up the hill overtaking slow moving vehicles.

I learned the hard way about this form of road design near Chirk on the A5 - this is our local version. DO NOT GIVE 'EM THE SATISFACTION - OR THE MONEY.

Been done again has it? About bloody time. This camera is a pain in the arse. I'm a trucker, and the one thing you need to do to get over a wet hill, is? yep, take a run at it, so you're not dropping to the bottom half of the box and spinning your wheels (tanker, all the liquid runs to the back, taking the weight off your drive axle). Incidentally, apologies to all the car drivers who are surprised a loaded truck slows down when you drop below 40 for the camera (no need to brake there). Result? 3 or 4 trucks crawling up the hill at 5-10 Mph, huge line of cars trying desperately to get past before getting caught at 40 for the next 4 miles. Stupid cynical location. Incidentally, I seem to remember a big prang there a while back, so the "safety" camera is obviously working...

Of course the 'safety' camera is working, it's raking in lots of cash. At least, it WAS!!!
