..After a bit of advice here from knowledgeable M3 people...... are E46 M3 prices on the rise? I have a chunk of money sitting in an ISA earning bugger all interest and have spent ages scanning Ebay and the like for possible "future classic" purchases, as it seems to me that if you pick the right car, you are likely to achieve a better return than current building society accounts. So if I bought a manual M3, with say, 70-80K miles on it now for £9-£10K, is it likely to rise in the near future? My gut feeling is that the n/a straight sixes will become more prized and after the E30, the E46 will become the most treasured M3 of all....

Also on my short-list, all manner of cars such as S2000, 350Z, even the Mazda RX-8, which is obviously a whole lot less money! But a passenger ride in an M3 back in 2002 when they were new did leave an indelible mark on me, I thought it was an awesome car then and I am sure it still is now......

Did you go for a manual CS?

What's your thoughts on SMG CS values?

2 at ML for strong money!

I thought they looked like strong money as well. But then I drove one of them, was smitten and put down a deposit. The 50k miler I bought has clearly been cherished and drove absolutely spot on. The quicker rack makes a big difference compared to the standard car. And in IB with the CSL alloys, they just look right, IMHO.

SMG divides opinion, but I'm a fan. It's not as if it's held back values of CSLs.

I am fortunate to have a CS too

Only Estoril Blue CS in the UK. SMG with CSL Rev match installed

Had it two and a half years- love it!

Had a 53 plate M3 in 2007 and I do notice the difference the quicker rack makes

You've made a great choice and at least you get to compare daily with a CSL

Too right. Solid gold investment. I reckon even cabs running 19"s with SMG mah well break £100k in a couple of years. Hoover them up I say.

I'm hoping prices will stay the same. My plan is to pick one up a few years time.

Buy an E46 M3 for £10k and in 5 years it will be worth £15k. 50% return, 10% pa, £5k profit.

.....er, then allow for £1,500 pa to run the thing (minimum)... servicing is hugely expensive, plus tyres, insurance, tax, blah blah.... and with luck you'll only lose a few grand.

Your joking arent you?
You think buying a M3 with 70-80k miles on it for 10k today will go up in price?
No chance. I think many fail to realize they still need looked after to a very high standard to command good money. that costs! you cant just buy it and leave it sitting around.

I bought an 02 car which is perfect (IMO) spec; coupe, manual, 18's in black/black, professional nav.

It had done 78k miles and i've only added a bit to that. Quite an expensive winter though, clutch & flywheel and also dash failure so £2.5k there, will need tyres soon as they are pretty old.

I plan on keeping it for a while yet, but I wonder whether it will be worth more in future...

Not sure its quite that expensive to run, and if the op plans to keep it garaged, summer use, low miles, and Sorn in winter then i'll doubt it will cost as much as you suggest.

There are plenty of Indy BMW centres who can service for a fraction of costs of main dealers, and Continental M3 tyres are now only £155 each fitted (255/35/19 rears) oil service even at main dealers are £200 and inspections 1 and 2 £600 and £899 respectively, the Indy dealers are almost 1/2 that for Inp 1 and 2 services, i would be very surprised if many E46 M3 owners are using only a main dealer nowadays.

There are far worse options to invest your money in. Take depreciation alone on an M3/M4 (current model) its a money loser, an E46 M3 wont lose you money, it might not make you loads, but you can still enjoy the car, and much more enjoyment than money sat in a bank at 1.6% APR....

OP no brainer, buy it run it and enjoy.

Buy the best you can afford, and get an inspection done on it to check it over.

All valid points. But put simply, you cannot buy a 10-15yr M3 with high(ish) miles and expect it to be cheap to run. It just won't be. And if you're unlucky, then it will be a very expensive exercise. Also the sub-frame problem with them is now out of the 10yr warranty.

As an aside, as another person pointed out, the only M3's that will go up in value will be the very low mileage ones, with one or two owners. There were far too many M3's made and a 100k miler with 5 owners will never be in demand. Now, a low mileage one owner 1M... that's a whole different kettle of poisson. They will be £70-£80k cars at some point.

A CSL (#338 of 422) has gone up for sale here in ROI for €90k at a dealer. Of course just because the asking price is 90k doesn't mean it's valuation is in line with this - especially when comparing against UK prices it does seem a little rich. This main dealer had an asking price of €38k on the same car back in 2011.
