Visit to MB and Porsche museums

Planning to visit the Nurburgring in July and then drive down to Stuttgart to visit the Porsche and MB museums. Might need to do both museums in the same day although still working on the plan. Saw the Porsche museum offers factory tours - are these worthwhile?

Any good advice to make the most of the journey and visit?

Factory tours need to be booked well in advance
Porsche museum is free to Porsche club members
MB museum is huge and needs at least half a day to do it justice

Get the audio tour if you do Porsche and take the iPad to MB to aid the tour. I wouldn't do both in a day.

They are closed on Mondays from my recollection. Porsche dealer opposite worth a visit.

Found out that factory tours are Mon-Fri, will probably be there at the weekend so may not be an option

It's not free, it's half price ! All museums in Germany are closed on Mondays. Visit the Technic Museum in Sindsheim half way between Frankfurt and Stuttgart ( you can see the buildings and some exhibits from the motorway ), brilliand IMHO.

The MB museum is the bigger of the two and has some very decent history of the firm on display including some quite frank explanations of the firm's role in the nazi war effort, use of slave labour etc so much more of a holistic 'museum'. The Porsche one is just focused on the cars really with some amazing metal on display as you'd expect. Also a decent restaurant for lunch and an area where you can watch mechanics working on classic customer cars like 959s. As a poster mentioned above the showroom over the road is well worth popping into. When we visited a few years ago there were 3-4 GT2 rs's waiting to be collected. I would say allow a full day for MB and half day for Porsche assuming you share an equal interest is either brand!

You will want to take your time in the Porsche museum and the traffic is thick getting there so stop up somewhere close, the night before and then start early.

The dealer across the road was very helpful sorting out the fault that developed on the way to Stuttgart. Remarkable only in that when I went in and said I had a fault with my spyder the receptionist went into panic mode till I added 'Boxster Spyder' where she visibly relaxed. - Porsche had just started delivering the 918 Spyder the month I visited. The gentleman who sorts out the parking, at the dealership, can direct you to an excellent 'car themed' hotel ("Not expensive no any way you drive a Porsche sir, not a Volkswagen")
