Is there a process or a way of whittling things down to at least get you in a general career direction? I did try brainstorming about things that I am interested in and enjoy but don't think its helped any. I've just ended up with a list including lots of wildly different things confused

There is; and it's often best if it's facilitated.

In simple terms:

- top 3 reasons you don't like current role/industry
- top 3 dream jobs with top 3 reasons why for each
- list in priority order what is most important to you: location; enjoyment; remuneration
- review job adverts for top 3 dream jobs and single out that which you are closest too now in terms of competence/qualifications

Trick is to be honest and realistic. The discussion then begins to help find an achievable option.

Good luck!

Thanks, very helpful... Though I am going to struggle with writing any dream jobs! I haven't been able to think of one!

Then convert dream job to what is it that excites you and is there an industry that provides that excitement e.g. One might be excited about diving; so one could contemplate becoming a diving instructor.
