I might have the wrong nonclomenture so apologies.... I'm after an inexpensive micrometer / caliper so I can properly setup a differential I've replaced the R&P & bearings on.

It needs to be at least an 8" one to be able to set the bearing preload correctly.

Something like this:

But in the UK, hopefully around the same price too! I'd like to order it in time for the weekend if possible

Cheers

Digital ones don't have enough reach. There's a 7" ring gear in between the two points I'm measuring

Hey up, an internet warrior!

Those micrometors are expensive, I found those eBay ones just as easily as you did.

The digital ones aren't big enough, see my previous post.

I didn't know if I was missing a trick as they're an awful lot cheaper in the USA, I figured there must be a source of those in the UK

This one:

Or this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-to-8-micrometer-with-s...

Are open to offers and don't look too expensive. I don't think there is much of a market here in the UK for cheap Chinese measuring equipment.

Those micrometers are not expensive, they are top quality Moore and Wright precision instruments compared to the Chinese junk on the US website. A new M&W 8" micrometer is £130-£140.

It's all relative, they're expensive compared to the one linked in the OP.

Your original post says at least 8" & then you talk about 7" plus in another reply.

The digital calipers are 200mm.

200mm = 8" that is why I suggested them, but if you now want something different then tell us what you want & we will try to help again.

Which, at only, 7 to 8" is apparently not big enough anyway.

You misunderstand, the 'fingers aren't long enough, I'm measuring two points and in between those two points is a 7" diameter ring gear, it's in the way, but it can't be removed for the measurements, so you need either the mechanical version which has a big curve in the device to allow you space, or very long fingers on a digital caliper.

The measurement I'm taking is roughly 8" point to point.

I'll post a picture later then you can see what I mean

Look for a pair of curved calipers, like these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXTRA-LARGE-300-MM-12-TO...

Set them to the dimension you want on the work, then remove and measure the gap with a straight vernier.

You know I just came one to post similar i.e. if it was a good/bad idea or not!
