Actually on my p38 range rover 4.6 top-hatted engine, but you guys are on the ball so i thought id do a sanity check here first.
Basically i have just got to work so I'm 140miles away from some of my tools and test equipment.
The car drives but is lumpy and sluggish under load really bad at 35 to 40 mph, much better cruising under light load
Cylinders 1 and 3 are running cool I've swapped the leads, plugs, and coil pack no change.
Plug no1 looks good plug. no 3 was a little oily but not too bad
I can't do a sniff test till i get home but i have suffered an intermittent water leak from the radiator (possibly unrelated) but not really noticed coolant loss.
im guessing the gasket has gone between the cylinders and not the water jacket.
any thoughts?

As you say not much you can do until you can get some test gear on it. First call compression test or leakdown.

It's the same on both fuels so I've eliminated the injectors

I'd suggest a WOT compression test Richard. If the gaskets failing the test will show low readings for 1 and 3. If you have reasonably good compression across all 8 cylinders then it's something else.
