Got into a little bump a few weeks ago. Old duffer pulled out in front of me on a 2 lane roundabout to turn left on dual carriageway. He left me the choice of rear ending him, swerving across the fairly busy roundabout to miss him, heading for the armco, being rear ended myself or staying in the left lane where I was and going through the car sized gap he left me.

Needless to say I picked the continue in left lane option, found myself ahead of him and his n/s front wing impacted my driver's door as he pulled back left. All fairly straightforward so I thought. By coincidence both drivers are insured with the same company.

The insurers have asked me to comment on his statement, and I'm sure vice versa and I don't know why. Any suggestions please.

Just tell them what you think simple as that really. Is there any untruth in what he's said

^^^^This.
Likely his version of accounts will differ from yours & he may be saying that he was driving correctly & you tried to undertake him causing the collision.
Are there any independent witnesses?

Because you're both saying different things happen, and they'd like to find out which of you to believe.

As above, simply state what happened and point out the errors in what he has said.

Is telling the truth really so difficult?

This is the point I think. He was so clearly unaware of what was going on, a case of driving without any attention to the other traffic, that he probably genuinely thought that's what I was doing rather than trying to avoid a collision. I'll spell it out in more simple terms to the insurers. Doesn't alter the fact that he drove into me.

Sadly no witnesses who stopped or camera footage.

Can you post up his version of events?

How much does it differ from yours?

Two drivers with different opinions of course of events to an accident I can see the insurance company saying that the accident is 50-50 so have the opportunity to screw both drivers at renewal time.

If you were on the roundabout first you have right of way op. So just tell it like it is.

You have priority. That doesn't give you carte blanche to do stupid things.

I think the rule is simply give way to vehicles coming from your right. I don't think it says if you're on the roundabout you have priority.

Standard procedure really, the case warrants further investigation and so asking for comments on other people's statements is the next step to take. regardless of the fact that both parties are insured with the same insurer, your claims are looked at totally independently, however as suggested don't be surprised if your insurer and their insurer.....agree to a 50/50 split on liability.

If people on the roundabout didn't have priority, there wouldn't be a requirement to give way to them.
