Hi Gents

I am interested in a 3.9 Plus 8. Can you please tell me how to easily spot the differences, visually, from a 185bhp car to a 220bhp car

Thanks

Sorry, can't give you an answer but I would point you towards TalkMorgan, someone on there will be able to help.

The 3.9 was around for a few years in both carb and efi versions.
The bhp output varied.
There was even a 4.6 for a short time giving the higer bhp.
Best bet is go to Talkmorgan.
I have a 4.0l which is 3.9 with modified internals by Rover and called 4.0 to show the mods. I have not had the bhp checked but someone with a similar engine got 204bhp.
All the V8,s are good performers , even early 3.5l cars, with plenty of torque.

No Morgan was ever fitted with a carb 3.9, I doubt any production car was. The 3.9 came in around 1990 and until about 1992, they were largely non catalyst cars. After this, cats were fitted and an easy way of telling is the twin fuel fillers disappeared at the same time. So, if it's earlier than 1990, it will be the 3.5 litre, early ones on carbs, later on injection, around 1983/4 I think but not sure.

The 3.5 V8 injections were introduced late 1983, 192bhp (2 more than Rover due to manifolds)

3.9 injection 1990 as stated, also 192bhp quoted (might have been 193, but effectively the same), but a bit more torque. The non-catalysed 3.9s (but all injection, none were carb) were quoted same bhp but at higher revs. From about 1992, all were cat. equipped.

4.6 introduced in 1997, this was the 220bhp. I think the twin stainless exhaust was introduced at the same time. 3.9s were available alongside. 4.6s had different Lucas distributor ignition.

Rover 380 gearbox introduced in 1993 (reverse right and back).
