I have a VERY simple business that is not VAT registered. 100% of income is via commission payments from the same place and outgoings are bog standard sort of stuff a small home office type place incurs.

So...no invoicing, etc.

For years Microsoft money has done the job - but anything better out there for tracking recurring bills and so able to predict cash flow?

What about the Xero type cloud stuff?

I use the basic Quickbooks/Intuit package, few quid a month. I've linked my bank account to it and use it to record all the outs and ins so I have a record of it. What I found nice was that it worked out working from home claims automagically and kept and eye on incoming transactions so you just mark them as business / personal /whatever.

Its missing a few features I'd like to have, they're there in better more expensive versions of the same program but it seemed the cheapest thing out there that could help you file and submit anything and everything you're likely to need

Not sure why I read it as personal in the business section. Yes brilliant, but probably overkill for what you want especially at £25 a month. Can you not use a spreadsheet?

I've used Xero for more complex businesses and FreeAgent for smaller ones, though it sounds like that might be overkill.

Sounds like a spreadsheet would probably do as mentioned above? No cost then, assuming you have MS Office?

If you want a hand putting one together drop me an email, happy to help

I've recently started using Wave after many years of using Excel. Tracks everything it needs to and stores everything in the cloud - it's also free.

I would not store anything like that in the cloud, far too susceptible to hackers.

In some cases, cloud apps are more secure than an unprotected Excel sheet on an unpatched Windows machine sat behind a modem/router

It's not necessarily a bad thing, but investigation into how details are stored together with a bit of research isnt always a bad thing, though I'd agree that cloud apps arent for everyone
