Hi,
Does anyone know what the service interval is for changing the spark plugs. I've read every 37,000 but I've also read this might have changed (via a bulletin) to every 3rd oil change. If someone could confirm it would be great help.

Thanks

Pete

Other than the running-in service none of the services are mileage based - they're all condition based. Check your service book - it should be clear in there.

In reality (completely disregarding BMW's maintenance dictum), the spark plugs for the S85 form part of the knock sensing system, so significant performance is lost as they degrade. Personally, I would not go past 15k and try to change them at 10k miles.

I thought the only condition based service was the engine oil, the others (SMG oil, Diff oil, Air Filter, Micro Filter) were on intervals i.e. Micro and air every time oil is changed, SMG Diff every third time oil is changed. With brake fluid every two years. 2008 BMW manual for M5 and M6 states spark plugs every 37,000 but as I say I'm not sure if this changed now to every 3rd oil change via a subsequent bulletin or if it is still every 37,000

Thanks Jim,

I've only done 14k since they where last done. But as you say I will probably get them done anyway. But I would like to know the official BMW line as I've talked to the dealer and they are fairly clueless (no surprise hey).

I think the reason for the every third oil change rule is because oil is due every 12k miles so 12x3 = 36k miles for spark plugs which is what the manual states as you've highlighted.

In reality if you don't do 12k miles a year and get the oil changed every year at 5k for example, it would probably still be wise to get the plugs replaced at 15k/3 years since they do get old. However I noticed no difference when I had mine changed recently. It's a relatively cheap service, bought 10 plugs from Opie for £100 and an extra hours labour £75.

By the way spark plugs (and microfilter) do show up on the CBS in my car. SMG and diff oil don't.

Thanks useful info,

I think the spark plugs and microfilter where in the CBS pre 2008 for some reason (my one is a 2008 model)

If you send me a message with your chassis no (last seven) I can check the latest official plug interval.

Apols - I stand very much corrected.

Hey no problem mate, I'm still not a 100% that this is the current position, I've a feeling it might have changed from a fixed (miles) to a variable linked to every 3rd oil change as mentioned above this might have to do with x3 oils average miles would be about 36-37k.

37k seems like an odd number.
