Anyone else wondering why they have so many settings for each item in their car?

I can set each side of the cabin's temperature to 0.5*C increments- clearly because 22*C is too cold and 23*C is too warm, I really need 22.5*C!

I have 12 fan speed settings on the heater, yes 12!!

Even the heated seats have 6 heat increments, why? confused

Seems to me like the engineers are getting a little bit carried away with themselves - the last thing I need to be doing whilst driving is flicking through 12 different fan speeds. High, low and medium would work just fine!

You don't need to adjust the fan, just leave the climate control on auto.

Quality German engineering that's all.

I did chuckle to myself when I got my first Audi with the 0.5 degree increments.

As above though, just leave it on 21/22 auto. Heated seats on 4 when its chilli.

I suppose for some markets it's in whole degrees F so 0.5C more closely relates to that.

On the 'steps' thing, the volume control annoys me as the steps are too big - I like it to be background, but still able to hear it but I can never find a setting that's just right. I wish it was just linear.

But then you get the annoying max fan setting blowing cold air when you start the car and it's cold in the cabin.

Not if your climate control works.

Well, my expertise of climate control ends at "set the temp display to the desired temp (typically 23*C) and hit auto", so perhaps I'm missing something, but when I last parked up the car, I couldn't hear any fan noise and the cabin was a comfortable temperature.

When I started the car this morning, it was cold inside the cabin and it sounded like there was a gale force wind coming from the heater, which was blowing cool air.

Please enlighten me: what am I doing wrong?

Is there anything PHers won't moan about these days?

Apparently not; some will even moan about someone moaning about trivial issues. laugh

No idea. Mine is set to 21 degrees all year and I never touch it. It does not run the fans in an attempt to heat the car until there is actually heat in the engine to heat the car with.
Every climate control unit I've ever used has done this.

Well the 2008 BMW, 2003 and 2008 Mitsubishis, 1999 Porsche and 2007 Audi I've owned over the past 10 years all act(ed) in the same way - ridiculous heater fan level on start up when on Auto, so perhaps it's just me?

What car(s) do you own and what settings do you have them on?

The Toyota, Alfa, Saab and Merc (first two from memory as they're long gone) all would restrain fan until there was heat to blow (if the cabin needed warming up) when left on auto. If the screen is steamed up, I have to override it with the demist button to actually have the car blow some air.

I have no experience with the makes you mention. Anyone else?

(The lotus climate control involves checking if it's going to rain before taking the roof off.)
