Quickest way to become a heating engineer + gas safe reg?

Hi guys, wondering if any current gas engineers could provide some advice.

I was wondering whats the best way for me to become a gas engineer. For years i have done all my own plumbing as im a landlord and dabble in a bit of development too, and i find the plumbing side of things a complete doddle.

I would rate myself as competent, can solder, know the ins and puts of plumbing and if you gave me a boiler i could install it with no bother so i wouldnt want to join class 101 as they sit there and learn thw difference between 15mm & 22mm.

Is there a home learning course pwrhaps with assessments and practical sessions maybe over the span of about 6 momths to a year or is the only option college and an NVQ of some form?.

I dont actually have anything major qualifications wise, a diploma in IT and a good set of GCSE results being about it but im lookimg to do something other than property refurbs for a little while and want something official thats relevant (not the mention the 700 odd quid gas safety check bill each year that i would save by doing my own certs )

Thanks, it appears i need to be able to find work experience with a gas engineer in combo with a part time nvq level3. Might have to scratch that idea and think of something else.

Have a chat with Gastec in Milton Keynes. They can normally arrange the portfolio element.

I went with them for my domestic & LPG quali and ended up with an M&E firm before completing a Commercial changeover. I'm now no longer working full time in that field but on the register to keep my hand in.

Hardest part will be gaining the experience to go self-employed or finding someone to take you on with little experience.
