Have you ever bought anything that has gone up in value, ruling out investments, houses and cars etc? I stumbled upon this recently on Ebay........

....going for £150.00. I originally paid £30.00 for my copy and while I'm not going to retire on it, it's a nice bonus to excellent book.

Rolex GMT Master II - appreciated by about £1,000 since I bought it secondhand six years ago, and an Omega Seamaster Professional full sized automatic has gone up by about £600 since I bought it secondhand eight years ago.

I didn't buy either of them as investments, I just really really liked them.

I guess other people do too...

I've got a copy of the Lewandowski Art and Car book on the Audi sport quattro, a very nice book that was on a stand at Race Retro last week for £425 - I can't remember exactly what I paid, but it was just over £100. Also the other unusual quattro book "Sieg einer idee" was on for £295, more than double what I paid - though both of those are asking prices from a top-end dealer, so maybe they're a bit on the heavy side. I have seen the Lotus Carlton book being offered at £300 too, mine was bought new for about £25. Other than that, I've got a copy of a solo single by JJ Burnel (bass player with The Stranglers) that I paid £2 for, which (even in the relatively common Dutch import form that I have) changes hands for around £300 now. In fact I've got quite a lot of related stuff that is worth a lot more than I thought.

Sadly, prices asked by dealers aren't always realised. A quick look at Abebooks says some of my collection are worth a nice sum, but would they actually sell for those figures?

I have Janos Wimpffen's "Time and Two Seats" - it cost me £200 about the year 2000. and dealers now ask £1000+, but I'm not holding my breath.

A couple of paintings. Unfortunately not old masters, however a couple of hundred quid purchases a couple of years ago are, I think, going for about double now, and one sub 1k commission is apparently worth five times that now. Nice to know, but they can stay where they are on the walls.

Bought an Autoart Focus WRC 2002 for £10.

It's been valued at £600.

Okay, I might have had Colin McRae sign it a few months before his death but still!

And my house. It's gained 26% in value in two years. South East madness wobble

Is that asking price or sold price? There are quite a few on eBay, most are buy it now at high prices, but there is one auction listing with a day to go and selling at £1.20 (+ postage).

None of these have appreciated in value until you realise a sale. I'd certainly take valuations based on ebay prices with a huge pinch of salt.
