Defender vs Taliban taxi?

In the not too distant future I need to acquire some off road capability. Nothing like green laneing but at times the land I need to access can get a bit sticky so 4x4 is a necessity. Looking at the prices for used Defenders, they seem to be somewhat bonkers unless you are looking at something with stratospheric mileage or something needing work. Since I would also need to get hold of a trailer for carrying capability, which will be extra £'s, I am wondering if something like a single cab Toyota Hilux would be a better bet instead. The prices are certainly better! Has anyone had one of each for comparison purposes?
