So, I have finally decided to part company with my 996 Turbo which i had for four years. And after 10+ years with Porsche i feel it is time to try something new. After a lot of consideration i have boiled it down to either the R8 V10 or the F-Type V8 RWD. Two quite different cars yes but both has its pro's and con's in my view which make it a difficult choice. Keen to hear opinions, i'm looking to spend £60-70k so implies a 2010-2012 R8 or a 2014-2015 F-Type.
After driving both i'm slightly biased towards the F-Type:

F-Type:
+ Newer car for same money and within warranty
+ "wilder" - the v8 + rwd put a smile on my face i rarely had with the 996 given its power is so controlled
+ more practical living in central london?
- Steeper and uncertain depreciation
- only automatic

R8:
+ "true" supercar
+ Manual
+ prices seem relatively flat
+ more fun on track (albeit i do max 1 track session per year)
- Maintenance cost? Eg at 2010-11 cars starting to be risk of clutch change etc

Looks? I like both although the r8 probable edges it.

It would be the F-Type for me.

Newer, looks better, sounds better.

The R8 is great, but it isn't a supercar IMO, and the interior is too similar to every other Audi to really feel special

No contest - R8 every time.

I think the F-Type is the least plausible "sports car" that I have even driven. It is a mess - lardy, contrived exhaust noise, no steering feel, laggy throttle. It's a poser's car that does not even fit in parking spaces.

The R8 is a decent car.

Mate I would have to go with the R8 v10 think it would hold its money much better than a F type IMO and if your under 40 you can't buy a jag!! IMO

R8, no contest at all. Magnificent engine and controllable handler. For the money, though, I'd have a decent 996 GT3 CS or a 997T breathed on by Ken at 9e or 996 Turbo S. For £70K Ken would supply you with a well mannered 600hp weapon that looked and seemed completely stock, but would blow most stuff into the weeds.

interesting views, I would not take any of the 3 cars you have listed and they would not even enter a 20 car short list.

My selections were for driving, really. I'd have a Ferrari 550 for the money, but I wouldn't drive it that much. Does that figure in the top 20?

lol nope

I do think the R8 V10 is a top value for money car atm though and a nice buy.

I spent my £70k on a GT4 though.

A very fine motor, and a great driver's car that probably doesn't cost as much to run as a 12 year old 996T and might even appreciate. Not sure how many GT4s are / will be made, which is a factor.

I don't know anything about the R8 other than what one can read, but just sitting in the F-Type was enough to put me off it (as a 997 driver) - I agree with the poster above, it's not a sports car. Quite how it manages to be so huge and yet do so little is quite the accomplishment.

many thanks, interesting views. I was also firmly in the R8 camp before i test drove the F-type, as 1-2years ago would have never even looked towards a Jag...However i loved driving it and didn't feel it was too big, clumsy. Being mindful my driving is mostly UK country road weekeend i'm slightly concerned the R8 will be too well controlled to ever feel excited.

you don't say if you've driven the R8 V10 - suspect this would be more choice, that Jag exhaust is plain embarrassing IMHO

I had a 996 turbo, then a turbo S, then an aston v12v, then two i8's one after the other.

The later is the one that gave me the most pleasure. As an alternative to your two contenders.

Great position to be in. Having looked in the classifieds at both I'm astonished how much the Jaguar has depreciated already. Its a stunning car as its proportions albeit large are perfect. This one for example is stunning and really fantastic VFM. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...

To find an R8 V10 I liked was much tougher but eventually found this. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...

More expensive but its rare car being a V10 Plus manual and over all I think it would be a better ownership proposition than the Jag. So manual R8 Plus for me and I'd throw the £70k budget out the window.

Incidentally and I'm not recommending this but I did exactly what ST above suggests and sent the turbo to 9e. In terms of say adding £30k to change over to a newer car instead spending the £30k on optimising the 996 turbo with better suspension, turbos , intercoolers, and exhaust isn't a bad call. For £30k of upgrades I think 9e would get you closer to 750bhp and your 996 turbo really would become more fun and playful. R8 and even F Type R pretty tame by comparison. I can understand the allure of a new car though - I enjoyed just looking for a £70k R8 or F type - thanks! biggrin

Its interesting I'd love a 550 but doubt you'd get a really good one for £70k. GT4 wouldn't even be in my top 50 list of cars to own at any price. Each to their own beer

R8 every day, v10 is pure supercar. If the interior is an issue get one with all the carbon. If you don't like it after a year you'll get your money back, more than can be said fir the jag which will have dropped another £15k ouch
