I thought it was illegal to advertise specifically for women (or men) ? Unless special circumstances dictate of course. But handing out drinks in Asda ?

Intetesting one. Reminds me of a conversation I once overheard at an F1 race; bloke moaning about his lack of opportunity to be one of the 'F1 girls' who stood near the podium and provided a lineup as the drivers walked up to it. I recall that his mate said just apply and see why it is that they don't hire you!
