Why is it that some photos look better on my smartphone than my calibrated monitor? Doesn't make sense. (Just to preempt discussion of my monitor calibration, the 20x30cm d-s prints look pretty much like the monitor rather than the smartphone)

Because smartphone displays are designed to make everything look great. They produce bright, crips and oversaturated colours, plus they squash very large resolutions into a small area so everything always looks sharp.

For print, they are not a good judge, but if you publish a lot online, it's good to know that apple, samsung, sony etc. are all making your pictures look great for you wink
