Bad 1 - Two days ago I was pulled over for driving in an uninsured car. Bad 2 - I gave my brother's name and address. I/he was given a fixed penalty notice of 6 points and a £200 fine. Bad 3 - I don't have a licence or insurance. Bad 4 - The car is registered in my brother's name.

I am really sorry for what I did and I'm really scared and confused about what I can and or should do next. Please don't have a go at me I feel bad enough already. I was just hoping for some advice. Should I try to get my brother to assume the guilt and pay the fine and any other related costs for him? If he will.

This will come back and bite you on the arse in the future. Own up, get it sorted! Its not going to ruin your life!
There's also the fact that if my brother did that to me i'd have no choice but to whale 7 bells of crap out of him

If/when I do? What is the likely penalty?

This is not "having a go" but genuine advice - don't post admissions like this on a public forum. Every computer has a unique and traceable identity (even the one in your local library) and the first person to respond to your post was a policeman.

You have to talk to your brother. If he will lose his license for those 6 points, my opinion is you have to give yourself up. If not, it's between the two of you.

If you do give yourself up, your conscience will be clear, and the penalty will not be that harsh... you may lose your license for a while, but since you don't have it anyway...

You can just walk into a police statement and ask to make a statement, I believe you can take someone along for moral / legal support if you want.

I'm sure one of the police on here can explain the details, including the likely penalties, better than me.

I am so sorry. I am just scared of a prison sentence or something. I've not done anything bad before. I just couldn't go to jail. I'd lose my job and everything.

Can't help with regards the penalty and I really can't help but agree with the others and say confess now, the earlier you do it the better it will be. What I'm trying to say is the longer you leave it the more chance that the penalty will increase.

If my brother did that to me I would be devastated.

As a layman, I feel sure there is no chance of a prison scentence for a first offence. Would be nice if one of the BiB reading could back this up though.

tbh unisured drivers should have the book thrown at them but more than likely they get little more than a small fine.

I'll not tell you what I think of you for driving around uninsured and unlicensed as you requested.

Speaking as a layman prison seems unlikely. Its not as though you're a danger to the public and it reads as though you gave false details because you were scared rather than out of calculated malice. The police will be very professional and they'll get it sorted with the minimum of fuss. You'll also be able to look your brother in the face again.

That may have sounded bad - I meant to ask if there are any police solicitor type people who can help me through the legal side of it.

You will be allowed the services of a 'duty' solicitor at the cell area...take the offer and listen to their help..

If you've not been in trouble before and nobody 'innocent' had to go to court...(ie your brother), it'll look better for you..

honesty, honesty and honesty from here on it..

Let us know how you get on...

You mentioned cell area? does that mean I will be arrested and detained? I will lose my job if I am kept in. I know I must confess, I am just trying to put my mind at rest about my job and the prospect of jail. Thankyou for your advice again and I'm sooooo sorry.

I'm a suspicious sort...does this sound like trolling?!?

If not, good choice - these things have a nasty habit of coming back to bite you, and remorse plus acceptance of guilt are a lot more appealing to judges than deceit and cowardice!!!

Just a quick thought, seems as you gave the wrong details etc to the police, would that not be perverting cause of justice or similar?
And didnt that rally friving girls father get four months for lying about who drove their scammed car?
Dont want to be alarmist, but I would make sure that was not likely before admitting anything, especially if the brother is happy with the deal.
Not that I am condoning what you did, especially no insurance, but wouldnt like you to end up in jail.
Anyone know?
