Driving home from work tonight. Stopped at a junction. Gently pull out clutch to go across and BANG from the back end. No transmission. Got on the blower to recovery man. Ask nicely for low loader. Gonads frozen. 1 hour later man and low loader arrives and takes me home. Will turn up tomorrow to take naughty Chim and my wallet to TVR mend it man.

Not happy. Reckon if I'm lucky it's half-shaft. If I'm unlucky (oh yes) it's diff.

Had a look today. Driver's side CV joint has popped. Hopefully it hasn't snapped the drive shaft. On its way to local friendly indie for repair.

Apparantly a rare failure. Anyone else had this?

Good job it didn't happen at speed.

It does sound a rare failure. Out of interest though, if the LSD was working properly, even with one half shaft disconnected you would expect some drive?

It doesn't seem likely that the CV joint itself would come apart, the distance between the hub and the diff is relatively fixed and there's only so much dive at either end. How would the half shaft move endways far enough for one end to drop out, and why would it want to? On the other hand I sheared the end off the half shaft numerous times until eventually I got some uprated half shafts. They go at the circlip groove inside the boot, which might look as if the joint has come apart at first glance.

Bolts not torqued up on ends of the drive shaft?

Will let you know the details as to exactly what's broken when its been stripped down.

GreenV8s spot on with the half shaft breaking at the circlip point. That's what the mend it man reckoned had gone when I rang to book it in.

As for limited slip diff working with one side not connected to the wheels. It may have kicked in if I'd upped the revs but I didn't try it to find out.

Was the joint covered by a gaiter? Austec noticed during a service that one of mine had been cable tied at one end and had come loose - allowing in moisture. A jubilee clip soon put that right.

Latest update. Spend has it! Bolts have sheared off the hub end of the CV joint. Shouldn't be too much to fix but the bolts are special order. Still a bit worried about how this happened. Car is never driven hard and has no track day exposure.

Whenever possible I torque mine up, all 24, in use they seem to occasionally work loose. Its a common problem I believe - these along with the propshaft & diff bolts should always be checked at service time - but are they?

Glad you've not done anything more serious.

Getting car back tonight. Will torque up rear end from time to time (quiet at the back). Anyone know the correct lb/ft or N/m figures?

32-35 ftlb for all 24 is the figure I have.
