Hi
Simple question i think, are there differences in spec or quality in the years
Mark - IMHO, I believe the perceived wisdom is that from 2003 (maybe 2004), the factory had gotten on top of the engine component quality problems.Simple question i think, are there differences in spec or quality in the years
I believe spec' - body & interior - had pretty much remained the same throughout. Think it was 2001 when the front wheel steering rack/geometry/upright was 'softened'.

Being the owner of an early 2000 car, reg 1st April originally on a W plate, I can also add that the door release is operated by pushing the brass window rotary switch, and the radio console is a slightly different style.
The side rails to the targa top were separate g/fibre items and attached to the main roof panel.
Slightly smaller front discs (I think) and different calipers making it a bigger job to upgrade to larger discs if required. Minor tweeks to the front suspension were also made to the later Mk 1s.
I have never experienced any of the handling woes associated with the early models, probably due to previous owners playing with the geo. and fitting Nitrons etc. In fact I was amazed how well it handled on my first track day with it at Dijon and was then one of the fastest cars on track at Castle Coombe on a very wet day - as were my 2 passengers who both drive VX 220s, as I did before getting the Tuscan.

It depends when in the years the cars were built. The main difference is the front wishbone/upright/steering rack setup which came in with the launch of the S. The drilled discs with larger front discs came in Sep 2000.
Having had my July '00 car with standard suspension, then Nitrons and now with Nitrons and the later front steering setup and electric pump, I can say that the later setup is much better once the rack is properly set up. Nitrons do mask the issue don't resolve it.
On the engine front, there was a step change in engine failures from mid 2002, but if the 2000 car has been rebuilt since then it's a level playing field.

I'n not realy sure about that point.Mine was an early 2000 model (even had the 16" spiders) and had a rebuild at 35k miles in 2003.
I bought the beast in 2006 with 70k miles and promptly 34 miles later had to have a rebuild.
So pretty similar result.
Pity I wrote her off

I understood that the engine improvements came in, in 2004 when the young Russian stopped production to that stuff sorted out.
So, my 2006 Tuscan is over 70k now.
