Cycling and colds
Discussion
Got a bit of an event a week on Sunday and it's a lumpy 70 miles.
Riding had been sporadic over the winter but. I wanted something to focus and motivate. I only signed up a couple of weeks ago seeing that I had a few opportunities to get out and put some miles in. Most have been 2 hours rides so around 35 miles but I had 3 days this week where I wanted to get some 3 hr rides in. Unfortunately I picked up a fairly heavy cold over the weekend, and last 2 days, swollen glands and aching back and shoulders. That's written off yesterday and today and likely tomorrow. I think the rule is anything below the throat, avoid any exertion as such. Just wondering whether I can get out over the weekend or whether I should give it another couple of days to clear?

For me a winter cold removes any enthusiasm for a ride, not quite so bad during the summer when it's warmer.
I'm just coming out of a dirty cold and am looking forward to racking up some off ride miles this weekend, but don't quite feel up to a 31 mile Wiggle mtb ride that's local to me on Sunday.
Lots of water and vitamin C and see how you feel in a day or two would be my advice

I don't normally let a cold stop me riding but this week I have missed my regular Tuesday night ride and skipped a TT session last night which I may get in tonight instead.
I generally feel OK throughout the morning then deteriorate in the afternoon and by the time I get home I can't be bothered!
Maybe I just need a rest and I'll be fine for the weekend to make up the mileage!

A word of caution - back in Oct I had a 'cold', but I thought Sod it, it was pretty mild, I'll go for a ride anyway.
Started well enough, I went solo and kept the pace at "sightseeing" half way around I was really flagging, but finished and headed home.
The next day I was in bits, turns out I actually had Flu, I just so happened to be taking it well, until I decided to go riding about in the cold for a few hours, it knocked me sideways, 72 hours later I was in A&E with suspected meningitis, thankfully I merely had pneumonia, 4 weeks to feel better, another 2 to ride again.
