987.2 Catless race headers with OEM rear boxes
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I've been looking endlessly at exhaust options for the 987.2. As some may be aware, the CATS on the 987.2 are all in the exhaust manifolds, not in the rear mufflers. This is not the case in the Gen 1 987 where there are 2 in the rear mufflers and 2 in the CATS.
So....despite what lots of the exhaust sellers on here would have you believe, there is very little to be gained in replacing just the rear muffler on a 987.2 - compared to replacing it on the 987 Gen 1
With this in mind I am looking at installing some catless race headers and keeping the OEM rear boxes. From what I have read this will cost less and give more power than just a muffler on it's own. It shouldn't be too loud either.
Has anyone done this? What do you guys think?
Thanks
J

u sure u r on the right forum?
we only talk about market values, flippers and how good the cayman R is.
btw, I agree with your approach. headers, throttle body and plenum is where the power is at. keep std muffler.
also upgrade flywheel to single mass
upgrade to CAE shifter
upgrade to giro discs, proper pads
also swap to proper spg seats plus harness bar and u r all set.
but then i've only been saying that forever...
one day, the plain jane cayman will have its day.

Yep, exactly mate...
Good shout on those mods, mine is standard apart from an OEM SSK. It's just that the 987.2 seems very quiet and also feels a bit strangled at the top end.
I wonder just how much a backbox can add to the Gen 2...there's a lot of marketing rubbish being thrashed around. Fabspeed reckon 15bhp is possible with just a backbox !
The only problem with sticking a catless manifold on is that if you want to fit an aftermarket rear box later, it may be too loud. OEM Cayman R backbox might be just right though, it has a bigger bore than the standard one but is quieter than the aftermarket stuff.

Fabspeed also says that the secondary cat is in the exhaust on a gen2https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embed...
And that you can save "40 lbs from the rear of the vehicle" whereas the gen2 exhaust+pipe only weighs 35 lbs...
Fabspeed talk b
ks most of the time, as do most USA resellers ! the Fabspeed vid is shocking wrong lol muppets !!!
also race headers will blow your ears off, NOT pass an MOT and throw a cel on your dash !
I have cargraphic 2x 200 cell manifolds on my 987.2 car, it's mega and I get 350BHp, stock rear still.
mic is on the back next to the exhaust but you get the idea and FLAPS open on PSE.
https://youtu.be/NUXq8r-BD4o
here is the sound with NO ext mic
https://youtu.be/iFtTtY_WFsQ
I Doubt you will find any one else who has done it on here bar Bob, if you want info on the way to go pm me (if that now works,) I know the cars back to front.
Fly wheels and throttles on the 987.2 can cause extra issues, you need to know what to do or how to go, not listen to people telling you to fit this and that on forums when they have not done it !

Yeah, I don't know how Fabspeed gets away with it.
Thanks for the replies chaps.
I can appreciate what your saying about it being loud but as mine is not a daily driver I don't mind a bit of volume. Actually, as you can see from this vid, it's not silly loud. With regard to the MOT issue, I will just swap them over myself.
Check this out, this is the sound I'm going for - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCUBKrMF0bY
The other thing I want to do anyway is get a Evomsit or Softronic map which should smooth things out and get rid of the CEL. I was looking at getting a map anyway as people over on Planet 9 have said there is a hesitation on the throttle that is programmed in from the factory to do with EU emissions/noise regulations. Apparently a remap sorts this as well.
Porsche911R - Have you hade your car dynoed ?

the car in the vid sounds too hollow and loud imo, each to their own, it would be a nasty thing to drive even at week ends and will never pass any track regs. Thanks for the replies chaps.

The hesitation is a non issue it's only in 4th if you floor the car at 28 mph, you should never see 28mph in 4th so if you have not noticed it by now it's not an issue is it ?, just forum b
ks again.if you want a bespoke tune visit Jens in Germany, NO other tune will work right with the 82MM throttle body. Softronic even says don't fit one !
Evomsit or Softronic are nice tunes if you are just going to change Manifolds and nothing else and you should see 350BHp, but a custom tune and 82mm throttle and full system you should see >370BHp
depends how deep your pockets are.
if it just sound you are after the Tubi back box imo sounds the best.
I vbox box my cars before and after tend not to dyno them these days, If the cars faster I am happy est 350 bhp as is, it,s a tweeked Cayman R race map for hi ron fuel, cargraphics headers and vflow , not scots normal one which I felt did nothing much. I might visit Jens though and take mine to the full 375BHp
Ok great thanks.
I'm going for quite an agressive sound but my main thing is getting the most bhp possible. The 987.2 is such an epic chassis and the balance is crazy but it just feels a bit strangled and underpowered when it's standard. An extra 30-40bhp would be great.
Will look up Jens, I have them on facebook I think
I want to do the whole thing. Where do I get all the parts for the 82mm throttle body? Am I correct in thinking I need an IPD plenum and an OEM GT3 throttle body from Porsche?
Thanks

Hi.
I took my Cayman R to Jens for the full package - Full M&M Race exhaust with headers and 200 cell cats, evoms V-Flow GT3 throttle body, Plenum, desnork etc and had my car remapped on their rolling road. He hand-picked the components for max power.
Power rose from 315 bhp to 372 on their dyno. My Cayman R hit almost 190 mph on the autobahn... he has the chip stored there as well if you want the map along with the mods.. did a drag race against a 981 Cayman GTS PDK and above 100 I pulled away. I had a manual fwiw. Jens told me this was probably the fastest Cayman R in europe
The Full system is currently on the shelf at Jens in Germany - I sold my Cayman R and reverted the entire car to standard before I sold it,
so if you are interested in buying some or all of it I`ll give you a good deal. The stuff has only been on the car for about 2000 miles, so its brand new basically.
Send me a PM if this is of interest. Might also have some 997.2 GT3 RS Control arms lying there which can be sold ....allows for much more camber in the front....

You are massively Discrediting the man.
The results are on the same Maha Dyno, which is known to be conservative.
The fact that it showed 315 bhp on a 6000 mile Cayman R ( 330 bhp from Porsche) tells you that its not giving away any free HP.
I was there when they benched the car before/After and saw what kind of drivetrain losses and parameters they put in.
They were identical on both runs.
Very few of the modern porsches manage to produce factory numbers on that rolling road.
This is not a Ninemeister Comedy Dyno.

You are talking nonsense. its 370 not 400. The 991 GT3 is producing over 100 BHP more.
Porsche are extracting 350 bhp from 3.4 in 991 guise. Thats with the comedy stock manifolds and exhaust.
Not hard to imagine the Cayman is being deliberately strangled for it to sit below the 911 range.
Anyway, you are obviously of the opinion that the man is a Liar and a cheat.
Cargraphic and FVD both want to buy his know-how and maps, but I guess they must be clueless too.
He is extracting 412 Bhp from the new Boxster spyder with a Remap and a sports filter - check his facebok page.
Ehresmann.
Like I said, above 100 mph I was pulling away from a Cayman GTS PDK from a rolling start with me in a manual, make of that what you will.
