Alternator Problems T350
Discussion
I know a number of people have had these issues in the past. Initial problem was that the POD started failing to go off after switching the ignition off. Then the next long journey the alternator packed up. Fine - new alternator. Bought a TVR E2152 from TVR Parts, swapped over the pulley fitted it together with a diode (with the stripe facing the alternator). Started up, squealed like a pig. Tightened the new belt, no difference. Took it off again and in case the pulley was slipping, I locktited this on and did the nut up tight. Put it back on and squeals. Then left the car for a couple of weeks, connected to a battery charger. Dead when I got to it next. Recharged battery started it all up and guess what POD stays on and alternator still squeals. I also noticed that when the D+ terminal is connected and everything off there is a slight hum from the alternator.
So - (I) is the new alternator duff, (II) have I got another POD problem with the POD picking up a feed from somewhere else or is it all still a duff alternator?

I'm not sure if I can help you.
I have replaced the alternator last year on my Tuscan. I got an original spare part from Bosch. But before changing the alternator most of the wiring loom was checked/replaced, including the fuse (mainly because the electrics were all fine before the engine rebuild and completely shot after the rebuild).
The squealing belt would indicate not enough tension, but could as well be to much resistance due to the alternator (I had this on an old one long time ago that the shaft suddenly got jammed). Have you checked if it's running free?
When you say the battery was flat despite the fact it was connected to a charger, there has to be a current flow somewhere. I never heard that an alternator would do a humming noise, do you have the old one to check the connectors?
Good luck finding the root cause.

Thanks for the feedback. I've actually been making some progress although not there completely yet. I believe that the slight hum from the alternator with ignition off is due to a feed down the excitation wire (D+). This I think is also linked to the POD coming on overnight and flat battery.
In the end I dropped out the fuse box as having taken the POD out I could still see that the door opening buttons were getting a power feed with ignition off as the backing light was on. Fuse box looked fine, but I detected a drop of water by one connector. Opened it up (you can split it in two, and it was thick green with corrosion inside). At some time it has got damp, although there is no water leak on the car, and carpets are nice and dry. So I think this is the problem with current cutting across from one circuit to another. I've bought a new fuse box and waiting to put that in. Think that should cure the POD coming on and the alternator hum with ignition off. That just leaves the squeal which could be related or not - thinking here that if the D+ is taking a feed it might be overloading the demand on the alternator at start up. Anyhow waiting to put it all back together to see. I have also picked up another alternator tor try if that doesn't cure it.
