991 GT3 PDK-S Auto mode is the way...
Discussion
I was chatting with a very serious record holding racing Driver yesterday and he was telling me about his 991 GT3 experiences around the ring.
Std car with suspension on softest setting and traction control on. In PDK-S Sport auto he's done a sub 7 mins BTG.
During the lap he is airborne 3 times at over 160mph and has to lift just before one take off to land early enough to turn in for the following corner.
Any driver using the paddles to change gear is left behind and out of sight within 3 corners.
He reckons the 991 GT3 maybe good for 210mph standard as he has a GPS'd 206MPH and there was some left.
HOLY MOLY!!!!!!!!

PDK is still dull bar laps times though, so who cares ?
I just thought some may find it interesting.I had a 991 gt3 for a year and tracked it and never even tried it in auto.
He was saying the calibration is so good that on a full lap of the Ring there is only a couple of occasions where it changes up a gear where he would have held it so knowing that he would just slot the gear stick over to the left for manual so it held the gear and when he'd cleared that section would just slot it back over to auto.
Approaching a turn in 7th gear and then stamping on the brakes would see the box go straight to 3rd from 7th which is where the some of the time is made up.

Given that PDK provides the opportunity for optimum changes and super fast changes - why slow this process down by reintroducing a human?
Absolutely this ^But hold on... there will be some paddle flapping hero along shortly to tell us that they never use auto mode and the PDK is as good as a manual and zzzzzzzzzz
This has always been my issue with PDK, its an amazing piece of kit, but its better than me. If auto is the fastest, then what are the paddles for exactly?
If you continue down this path, you ultimately remove the driver, which of course is going to happen.
But if the car is for fun, challenge, pleasure, you want maximum interaction and control

Yes, I did wonder that....I think its about 20-25 second difference between full lap and BTG....maybe he is the factory test driver
He is not a Porsche factory driver but is certainly as experienced and as capable along with 20 years of ring experience.
BTG is 1.660Km less than the 7.25 factory lap.
This from google...
Some interesting facts about BTG:
The distance between the gantry and the bridge is almost exactly 1 mile, 1660mtrs.
It takes a top-end sportscar less than 25 seconds to cover this distance. Most normal cars with a 120mph top speed over 30 seconds.
A BTG lap isn't just 25 or 30 seconds shorter, as the standing start from point 'C' adds another 5-6 seconds back on the time for most cars.
The straight is very bumpy, and is uphill all the way to the bridge.
Top speed is attained into the dip AFTER the bridge on a flying lap
On a BTG lap top speed is attained before Schwedenkreuz or in the Foxhole (for lower power cars)

Set your fastest time in auto, then see how close you can get using the paddles, that would be a good exciting fun challenge would it not ?? If you continue down this path, you ultimately remove the driver, which of course is going to happen.

I can confirm this as I know the driver in question and he isn't a story teller.
This is a guy who had owned F40's for over 15 years with many Ring trips and 200MPH runs. Also a multiple race series champion and Nurburgring 24hr race class winning driver.
And I've had the pleasure of being passenger in his F40 which resulted in forced recalibration of ones senses!
And he has no interest whatsoever in colour of interior stitching!!! LOL

He still had to over ride the auto system in 2 area's so full auto he would be slower '!
I see a lot of gt3 vids and the cars are dropping the cogs out the bends, not befor.
This has to be slower.
So the story don't ring true about 3 corners and the auto would be off.

Yes, I get vmax over schwedenkruez in a GT3/RS...though the delta to some of the other fast stretches have reduced as I've got a little quicker.
On a flying lap although peak speed on DH is higher, not being a racer I chicken out just before the dip

So that the driver can choose exactly what gear they want to be in at any time. Obviously.Edited by sidicks on Sunday 13th March 13:07

Wouldn't you be getting to scwedenkreuz speeds around kesselchen just before the last lefthander as well later? Yes, I get vmax over schwedenkruez in a GT3/RS...though the delta to some of the other fast stretches have reduced as I've got a little quicker.

Agreed, 20-25 seconds the difference, closer to 20 I'd say for the 991gt3 especially vs t13 industry lap compared to the actual full lap.
