Using the "Basket Only" checkout with a trolley
Discussion
In some Sainsbury's stores I've been to they have a regular checkout (with a belt and standard queueing area) designated as 'Baskets Only'.
My assumption is that this is akin to an express lane for smaller/quicker shops. Thus, I see no problem with using such a lane with a trolley if I have a very small number of items such as today, when I had 9 bottles of milk. Only one needed to be handed over, cashier pressed "QTY > 9" and scanned it, and I was no doubt out of the store quicker than the bloke behind me with a basket of several different items.
Does my action make me a knob, or have I used the checkout within the spirit, if not to the letter, of the 'law'?

As a former Sainsburys checkout worker (during uni days) I can confirm that your actions are 100% within the spirit of the basket/express checkout. My assumption is that this is akin to an express lane for smaller/quicker shops. This also goes for elderly shoppers who may also use a trolley but only have a few items.

Comforting to know I'm not the only person who thinks like this. Checkout worker today was, frankly, a miserable This also goes for elderly shoppers who may also use a trolley but only have a few items.
and kicked up a stink about me going through. She also made a show of scanning one milk bottle nine times, huffing and sighing as she did so, instead of hitting the QTY button which I knew was there (as had seen other staff use it previously). It makes me want to go back, see how much I can fit in a single basket, and go through again just to prove a point. I can carry a lot when I want to...!

Probably miserable as her life hasn't gone quite as planned.

Why didn't you just buy 2 4 pinters?
Because that would be 8 pints. I was buying 54 pints of milk.

Slight off topic, but what the hell do you want with 54 pints of milk ?
Haha, I buy it for the office. There's about 200 of us having tea, coffee and cereal! We used to have a contract with a catering company but they were unreliable and expensive. Cheaper/easier to go to the supermarket twice a week.Got into a argument at the supermarket about this.
There were no signs up in the express area saying hand baskets only, it used to have a sign 10 items or less, and big queues at all the other tills. I had 7 items in a small trolley and went to these express tills, #6 item going through and someone says to me I cannot do that. I say 'nearly finished'.
'Sorry sir, you cant do that'.
'Ok' says I 'what do you want me to do'?
By this time the security guard came up and tells me this area isnt for trolleys, even though there was six tills and I am the only person there, I said 'no signs up saying no trolleys', he says 'it doesnt matter, I am telling you no trolleys'.
'What do you want me to do' says I, he shrugs his shoulders. By this time I could have been finished and on my way had I been left alone. I still had one ltem to put through.
'Ok, leave you to it, no problem.'
Waste of everyones time.

I cannot see a problem with that.Often its easier to take a trolley(especially the shallow ones) than carry just a few heavy items in a basket.
More annoying are those that take a fully laden, full size trolley, into a crowded self checkout area...while the staff look on
the shallow trolleys are far better from a moving and handling point of view for certain 10 items or fewer purchases ... like the multiple large bottles of milk , several crates of canned drinks etc ... my current favoured method of shopping is to use one ofthe stores that allows scan while you shop using rf guns ... though that still runs the chance of gettign an audit scan and you have have to get tags removed and meds / booze authorised
