Playing 5 a side last night, I made a challenge and turned my ankle very awkwardly.

I have sprained my ankle a few times and usually give it a day or so and the swelling subsides and the whole thing loosens up. The morning after feels sore but I always notice more flexibility.

This was a lot more painful than any time before and is still very painful today. Swelling is average (not as bad as other ocassions), mainly on one side. Left foot, let side.

The difference to any other time is my foot has a feeling of pins and needles. Is this something to be concerned about or is that just a symptom of a bad sprain?

Gutted about the whole thing as damaged my MCL and this was my second game since my 12 week lay off.

Doesn't look that bad to me, not that bruised or swollen.

But that doesn't matter, see a doctor

Agreed. The swelling on previous sprains has been far worse. But, it's the pins and needles that are concerning me most!

I'll book in tomorrow if it's still as painful.

Just getting over a very badly sprained left foot which went black and blue. Struggled to walk on it and they thought, a first, it was broken.

Now on week four and it has almost returned to normal.

It's probably just slowly healing so don't over worry about it.

Keep it raised when resting and maybe a bag of frozen peas for about 20 minutes at a time might ease the swelling.

I had no idea that they could take so long to mend.

And no that doesn't look too bad at all.

Will do. I'll post back in a few days if it hasn't improved and update with the professional diagnosis!

Gut feeling says a normal average sprain with the unusual addition of a numb foot/pins and needles

Update - the ankle swelled a lot more over the following days - doctor said it was most likely ligaments but nothing they can do. Played football again for the first time yesterday. Still a bit sore but held up OK!

Now i've hit 30 I seem injury prone. 16th Nov I injured my knee and second game back was 15th March where I immediately injured my ankle! Two games of football in nearly 6 months... i've put on some lbs.

I wore a support after I last sprained mine. Made me feel a bit more secure.

I did something similar playing 5 aside 7 weeks ago.

Thought it was broken at first. But it turned out to be minor ligament damage. Foot was very swollen and bruised pretty much all over.

Tried to play after 4 weeks. Schoolboy error. Then made the mistake of trying to play squash last week. Again schoolboy error.

It's almost as painful now as it was the weeks following the initial injury.

Turns out I don't mend as quickly as I used to grumpy

Did something similar jumping off a garden wall last week. Stress fracture or so the osteopath said. Pah, was much better today and I managed to run a bit of a parkrun today as it stopped hurting, big mistake.

Ive rolled both my ankles several times, they can swell up like a grapefruit!

My anecdotal advice is to be careful for the next 12 months, Ie. Where a support for your five aside games etc. Icebound it takes ages for them to be full strength again.

I write this sat there with my left ankle more swollen than yours, it seems reasonably different to previous, not necessarily that painful but odd ache, sure the bones are different and audible crack when I did it - I'm starting to get more concerned and may get it checked out.

Like others, now in my 30's I find injuries haunt me now! Turns out I wasn't as invincible in my younger life as we all thought we were!

Exactly this. I turned 30 in August last year and have pretty much carried an injury from September onwards....

I was working for a company that refused to support an inter-branch football tournament.
It was exactly this reason, younger guys seemed to bounce back, but a lot of 30-40y/o got involved and injured.

Agree. Last time I rolled mine the swelling was substantial and the affected ankle did not return to normal size for almost a year. I was in my 40s at the time but exercising regularly.
