I want a cheapish (older) Golf TDI as a hold over until I can find something classic. Any thoughts on which model Golf is preferred and conversely, which one(s) to avoid?

Depends how cheap you mean; the 1.9 TDI 130 will do stupid miles if well maintained but they are all old cars now and will need regular upkeep. There's a lot of rubbish around that's been run on a shoe-string.

If you're after something newer the 2.0 TDI CR (common rail) fitted in the MK6 is excellent also.

Agreed, my 2011 with over 100k miles was solid as anything when I sold it last year. Represent decent value used
