After a semi successful weekend in Wales last year (awesome riding, marred by a mate ending up in A&E) a few of us have decided to go to Scotland this year. My mate particularly wants to ride the red route from the gondola at Fort William. He originally said ride down Ben Nevis, which I agreed to before realising how hardcore that was, fortunately he meant from the gondola. Mid to late May is looking the best time for us at the moment, is that going to be too early for the gondola at Fort William?

On the way up or down I thought it would be good to break the journey at one of the trail centres in the borders. Which would be a good one? We'd ideally want one not too far from the motorway and more XC than downhill, we will both be on hardtails.

Nevis red route usually opens mid may though gondola is very much weather dependant as i have been on it in july and its been closed due to high winds so keep an eye on the mountain weather report.

The red route is more like black in places but ive done it on a hard tail you would have more fun on a full susser though

Have a look at laggan wolftrax when your up that way.

Im about 15mins from inners/20 from glentress the red route at inners is a good xc course, you have everything at glentress so i would defo say stop in there as well.

Hope that helps

Another vote for Laggan Wolftrax. Enjoyed riding that way when I was last up there.

Glentress and Innerleithen are both great. GT is a lot of fun, with a great bike park and wide range of trails. Inners has some scary DH tracks but it also has a so called "XC" route. More hardcore than anything at GT. Tough climb, but very worthwhile.

If I could only do one centre, I'd probably do GT as if you're fit you could do the red and black routes in one day. If you've a couple of days, do both. There are wigwams at GT and it's only minutes down the road from Inners.

Glentress does sound like the place to stop on the way up or down. Our initial plan of 14th May might be a bit tight for Fort Wiliam, but we should be OK leaving plans to the last minute.

Laggan is good, and if you're up that way you might consider taking a tour around Cairngorm with Andy from Back Country Biking, highly recommended.

Laguna does sound interesting, but it is a bit out of the way for this trip.

It's a shame I no longer have a place to stay in Perth.
