Glasgow Queen St tunnel closure

I thought I'd take the opportunity to whinge about this, seeing as it's simultaneously a good thing(electrification of the Falkirk line to Auld Reekie) and a bad thing(shutting the high level platforms for 5 bloody months and forcing most of the displaced services through the low level with resultant chaos and overcrowding). As an experienced armchair project manager-cum-transport minister this project seems like a total cheap-out; far better to bore another tunnel parallel to the existing one, complete with OHL, then upgrading the station and the old tunnel can happen piecemeal as it does at most other stations while passengers and services continue to run more or less normally. Having only one tunnel into the station has often been a bottleneck so two bores eliminates that. Not building a couple of new platforms on top of the carpark/old goods yard seems like another missed opportunity, as platform space is also an oft-cited capacity issue at Queen St; instead this space is going to filled with a offices/shops/other frippery.

Kinky, I like it though as it means the ghastly Scotrail House(or whatever they call it these days) has to be bulldozed.

Pah, what are you complaining about? Plenty of people would be glad for the opportunity to take in the scenic delights of Possilpark, Summerston, Anniesland, the lovely West End, Parkhead, Dennistoun & Springburn on the diversions.

ScotRail have been twittering lots of pictures of non-chaos at Queen St this morning, if anything it seems things have been over rather than under-planned. Will be interesting to see what happens when something goes wrong though...

The problem with another tunnel would be getting the land on the other side for widening the cutting and keeping the buchanan galleries stable on top as the drill went through.
