Hi all.

I bought a LHD '99 GT3 mk1 a few weeks ago. Its got 2k miles on it. I wondered what the Board's thoughts were on buying into the warranty scheme at an OPC.

My initial thoughts were that £800 odd goes a long way towards any repairs and the GT3 engine is bulletproof - if the amount of track miles racked up by the GT3 brigade in general without any problems is anything to go by.

What have others done/plan to do when you're beyond warranty?

Cheers

Depends on how much risk you're willing to take - as you say, ther reliability reputation of the GT3 is outstanding - I don't believe there's been a single failure in these engines, and they are being driven hard..

...but, it is approx £28K for a new engine if you are unlucky enough to be the first one.

Bulletproof is the word. Unless you have a warranty for all your cars that are out of manufacturers responsibility I wouldn't bother with the GT3 specifically.

I've just renewed mine at £725 so far I've had quibble free cover for a corroaded radiator and a stuck thermostat. Plus you get european recovery/assistance which is worth a couple of hundred quid via RAC.

Again, I am not on commission, but ANYONE who drives a £60k car without a warranty when a new engine is £23k has got bigger balls than me.

I bought my 996 a month ago and LOVE it but I would not entertain running it without the Porsche warranty - I am not in the fortunate position of being able to shrug my shoulders if there is a problem - I have spent all the money I could, and bought the best I could afford (i.e. the cheapest 996 in the UK OPC network, just about!)

I probably paid over the odds for the car, but got a belting 30k mile car from OPC with warranty and all the stamps in the book BEFORE they were due (serviced every 4000 miles by the same dealer....), and when I crack the throttle I can enjoy the howl without waiting for a pop.......

It might never let go in 100k miles, but I saved for years buy this car and the money has gone, mate! If I'd bought one without a Porsche warranty and then engine went I'd basically have to scrap it/set fire to it outside the OPC...

Again, as I say, these are £60k cars, they need looking after like babies (warm them up geeeeently) and a running with a proper warranty in case the worst happens. Unless you surname is Rockefeller of course.

£725 is cheap as chips as far as I am concerned when a new engine for my "cooking" 996 comes in at £11k.

Worrying myself sick every time I hit the loud pedal would simply ruin owning the car for me.

Just my two penn'th. You bought a great car, go the extra few quid and buy peace of mind. That is simply priceless.

I know of one GT3 Mk2 engine that went bang and also a GT3RS engine that needed an entire rebuild at under 2,000 miles (no trackdays at all) - both are
100% facts.

I also know of a GT2 that required a complete gearbox replacement under warranty (which costs in excess of £10k)

The chance of a serious engine/gearbox problem occurring is very small, but if it does it will be very very expensive.

I always advise everyone to buy the warranty.

As I understand it (from reading here and Renntech.org), this is part of the problem, isn't it? RMS problems, from what I can gather, most commonly occur on weekend cars that are wrapped in cotton wool and never taken anywhere near the redline.
