how to beat a breath test machine?
Discussion
it's all to do with a digeridoo!
anyone heard of circular breathing?
digeridoo and some brass instrument players learn how to do this. You basically continuously breath out through the mouth while breathing in through the nose.
You can do this with practice (I think they start off learning with a straw and a glass of water).
Breath test machines are designed to measure deep lung air, which is that where the air compostion most closely relates to the blood alcohol level.
Circular breathing circumvents this, and although alcohol is still detected, it's nowhere hear the levels that the deep lung air is.
Just hope the bib isn't a brass player and spots what you're doing.
Be interested to know what the actual legal stance is on this, as you'd presumable have to prove that 'ol satchmo' here isn't playing ball!
thoughts?, comments? chaps

If the air is going straight in the nose out of the mouth without any assistance from the lungs I could see it holding water (air?)
However the reason that breathalysers work is the alcohol in the blood evaporating across the alveoli so if the air is in anyway coming from the lungs, not just the 'deep lungs' whatever that refers to then there will be alco content.
Besides if the copper thinks in anyway you are playing silly buggers its arrest and a blood test which is infallible pratically...

It works well as my Uncle showed me in Australia earlier this year. I found it quite hard but after a while I can see that with practice it is a must for all drink drivers.
We used a pub machine that most pubs supply as a drink driving campaign aid. These provide huge amusement to all the locals who practice on it as a means of evading jail/fines for drink driving.
Finally and one really weird thing, is that the notion that people or men for instance can drink 2 pints and be safe is ridiculous.
Out of 5 guys, we all had the same to drink, 3 of us were well under the Aussie limit and 2 were hugely over. All of us were fully grown men but our readings were wildly different.
So 2 pints might be only a quarter of what some people can drink without being over the limit or more than enough for others

Street do you use a nose clip with the lion machine. We do when we do spirometery on patients. Oh and we can tell with a spirometer exactly where the air is coming from.
No nose clip, thankfully...(it's hard enough explaining to the brainless wonders what they have to do, without having them wear nose clips...
) The machine bleeps when air is put into is...also the amount of air is measured...etc etc.
Great theory and I have seen it done and the guy passed the breath test. I fail to see what is driving the air though. The diagphragm must be making small movements up and down to simultaneously draw in air and push it out which if it does not pull the incoming air deep into the lungs then there may be a slight advantage but its going to be very marginal. Nothing new here though its been around for 20 years or more.

While a nice party trick I think I must be missing something. If the air is going through your nose and straight out of your mouth - how are you breathing? Surely the technique has to take air into your lungs to breath but produce continous music.
I play the digeredoo and can confirm that this technique works, and that you can lower your blood alcohol reading on one of these machines with circular breathing.
You hardly need to circular breathe though, simply getting enough air into your cheeks and then breathing using the cheeks works.
Also blowing *only* just hard enough to make the machine whistle works well.
Never had cause to use it in anger.

>Bollocks. 1.2 liters of air for 6 seconds. Not even close to turning purple. Can you hold your breath for 6 seconds ?
This report also seems to prove the point about deep lung air, and makes the point that 70% of the air must be discarded before deep lung air is encountered.

I used to work for the courts, and have seen a great number of people lose their jobs and livelihoods over a couple of points on the breathalyser, often after doing nothing wrong ( breathalysed after someone ran into the back of them etc etc )
I have seen people blow over after having just one drink, hours earlier.
Circular breathing wont help the drunks, but it might make the difference for an otherwise law abiding person to scrape past the limit.

Much the same principle as bagpipes...
The air for the cheeks is always coming from the lungs, although I would imagine that it isn't deep lung air, which may be why the alcohol content may be lower.
