997 Carrera 4S Buying Advice

Hi,
Went to see this car this morning, my first experience of driving a 911 and it was a revelation in driving dynamics, very impressed!
It has full Porsche history, paint is in great condition and new tyres all round.
If I buy it they would throw in a minor service at the local OPC

- I don't have all the option codes, but does that look like the std aero kit?
- Is the front trunk smaller on the 4 wheel drive models?
- It has 5 previous owners, should I worry or is that fairly normal?

Looks good. I like the spoiler and think it is oem. Someone will confirm though. Also, those are my favourite 997 alloys for non GT cars.
5 owners is quite high but 911's traditionally have a lot of owners and yes the front trunk is smaller on a 4.
It's a manual and has sports seats too which are also a bonus.
Enjoy the search and ask the OPC to check the bores for scoring when they do the service.

2. Yes the "trunk" is smaller on the 4.
3. No, 5 owners is fine.
It looks like a lovely car, but as anyone here will tell you the 997.1 has engine design faults that may bankrupt you. It's not necessarily true, but Porsche warranty is advised.
Given that the car is round the corner from OPC Nottingham, I would agree to buy providing that the service is carried out and that it passes the 111 point check. Which is basically the same check that Porsche will carry out before agreeing to a warranty. I have it at the back of my mind that you'll need to own it for 6 months minimum before Porsche will warranty it.

Yes, plan was to ask for the 111 point check when they do the minor service.
Assume the borescope would be extra?
Would they do a rev range check as well?
Sytner provide a 6 month warranty, probably doesn't cover much, but would help bridge the gap till I could get an OPC one.

I think that looks really nice, but then I would: I bought more or less the 996 equivalent.
Sytner Select is for retailable vehicles that don't fit the sytner franchise. I've darkened their door from time to time but never bought. I got the impression the prep and after care is ok, although I have to say the vehicles I looked at had each seen better days. The advice to get a proper inspection is fine, but beware that bore wear can be "normal"; you need someone who can advise whether it's problematic. Sometimes people post about a vehicle, arrange to get it inspected and... Somebody else buys it in the meantime. I'd act quickly and I guess you'll have to swallow the cost of the inspection whether you buy it or not. I doubt sytner will put right everything a 111 point check picks up.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback!
Having now had a long weekend to mull over the pro's / con's of upgrading, I've decided to keep my 986 Boxster S for a while longer, not least because I've only had it 12 months and spent the best part of 2.5k getting to what I would consider top mechanical condition, I'm not sure I have the energy to go round that cycle again at the moment with a new Porsche.
Also with this being the first 911 I've every driven, I would like to try a standard 2-wheel drive Carrera and S, there is also the chance I could get to a Gen 2 Carrera (S unlikely at current prices).
Overall, it's confirmed my view that a 911 is the next Porsche for me, but I'm looking forward to another summer in the box :-)

I'd personally only buy a Gen 1 unless it had the work done to sort the engine, or the price was keen enough for you to get it done by a respected specialist.
Again, my personal opinion is that the aerokit has no place on a non GT car. I like the more regular cars to be 'honest' with they are - embrace the purist look of the standard 911!
And, for me, the final nail in the coffin for that particular car is that the 4WD is not very sophiscated on the Gen 1, but adopts the Turbo's system in Gen 2 form.
