how can something be owned before it's owned?

its the same as pre-order.... surely shops just mean "order" something?

It' has been owned by somebody already as opposed to being new. Pre owned or previously owned.

Pre order is to order something that isn't available yet for purchase. Order is to order something available for purchase.

Pre-owned is second hand, so why not call it that?

Why call it second hand rather than pre owned?

This one is definitely just an idiot, no hidden comedian talents.

For the simple reason that before it was pre owned , it was owned, it was first hand it had a second hand. Then when it was second hand it still had a second hand, but now it is pre owned, second hand with a second hand.

Oddly, I guess if you count round then the second hand is really the third hand. But the watch won't be that until it is pre pre owned. At that stage it will be third hand although still referred to as pre owned (or second hand) in common parlance.

It will still have a second hand, that is really the third hand.

I think on balance pre(viously) owned is fairly simple and understandable terminology and keeps all talk of roaming hands safely in the Jimmy Saville thread.

Simple, but don't get me started on crowns on watches or kings.

idea

Because if you call it a second hand watch, people would think it didn't have hour and minute hands.

There is no irony whatsoever in you making that observation.

1. You're trying to apply the "book" vs. "pre-book" thing (i.e. in terms of booking tickets etc.) to "pre-owned". Does not work. It is pretty obvious that pre-owned makes sense as a word, whereas pre-book doesn't.

2. When you're a new member here, it is very annoying when you can't post because other new members have been abusing the forums. I always wondered who these cretins were. Thank you for enlightening me.

Only when required. You've started a ridiculous thread in the Watches forum in some strange attempt to show how pensive you are.
