Hi, I use a RoadAngel 1 which is great for fixed camera sites but the laser detector seems rubbish, what devices have people used which they recommend to jam/detect Laser and Radar? I want something that will stop the wonderful law services taking my speed ideally. Of course I would never speed it is just an example ;-)

Easy, LT400

www.radardetectors.co.uk/lasertrack_lt400.htm

THE best on the market at the moment.

I mean, if a fully marked plod car is zapping you then any fool can spot one of those...its the unmarked ones and roadside mobiles that you gotta keep eyes open for.

The LT400 replaced the LRC & is even better by all reports.

you see that device in your dash board....the one with numbers on..the speedo, not the rev counter.

Well if you dont go above the limit for that road (and there are plenty of clues) you wont get knicked.

Dave (who got knicked 3 times last year)

yep, actually you should be travelling by bus or train so the government can keep tabs on your behaviour. After all, like the speed limits, they know best.

Whatever.

As to speed detection prevention: the fixed stuff is taken care of by Road Angels etc. however there's a lot to be said for the mk1 eyeball - increased alertness and observation make for safer driving as well.

Then again, there's the alternative argument that drivers focusing their attention primarily on vehicles and equipment at the side of the road puts them more at risk of on-road accidents....

OK I've finished derailing this thread. On topic, I only use a Road Angel myself.

Jammers are already illegal...in that you can be prosecuted for a) Obstructing a Police Officer in his duties or b) Perverting the Course of justice. Where b) is consdierably more serious than a).

How this works is that they try and take your speed, fail but get a pic - goes on a "naughty naughty" database. It shows up a second time and you get an early morning visit impounding the car and taking it apart until the jammer is found.

For a story see www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk

Laser and Radar detectors will be illegal soon.

GPS devices are legal now and will continue to be legal.

FWIW - I would buy a radar/laser detector now, whilst legal, and combine it with a GPS device and the aforementioned MK1 Eyeball. If you are prepared to break the law and speed - I suggest one would be prepared to break the law and use a radar/laser detector - especially as they are pretty indistinguishable from the legal GPS kind - so unless stopped and the PC consults the manual how you are going to get caught using it!

Just shove it in the glovebox if stopped!

And besides - if you are using it you won't be stopped because you won't be caught speeding!

The Radar detector *will* alert you to the GATSOs the GPS device will already have warned you about.

The Laser detector *will* alert you if you have been taregeted - which is too late. But it *may well* alert you if cars around you are targetted - in time to slow down.

Since its a lottery as to whether or not you get nicked by a mobile camera all one can try and do is improve one's chances. The above would seem to me to the most sensible "electronic" means of doing so - with minimum consequences should one be caught out doing so.

Of course, modifying one's driving style, such that enjoying high speed is only done in the places you are least likely to be caught at it will also improve your chances no end...and carries no additional consequences at all....

Thanks Don, Some good points raised, I think I will just keep my speeding to track days and book a driving holiday in Germany.

I have a roadangel so will just continue to use that for now

Mulling over the same issue myself and investigations validate all below....except....
that although jammers are being prosecuted under the 'perverting the course of justice'..the LT 400 is the car portion of the LT450, a remote device whose purpose is to activate garage doors/security systems or indeed anything else requiring remote switch operation. So if you own a desirable motor it makes sense to me to avoid getting in/out to open the garage door for security reasons. Also i think that the manual also states that once started the car should be driven and not left to run whilst stationary (please correct me if i'm mistaken)
(For those who have the LRC 100, this too has a seperate switch system available for purchase..not quite as 'Gucci';as a common frequency is used opposed to the LT 400/450 unique frequency (more secure).
So...yes..GPS..for the 'yellow perils' and legality, common sense for the rest.

P.S I was informed that the remote cruise system on NISSANS uses similar tech and operates with the same effect !!!

If you want a lower cost GPS only system, see www.talex.co.uk - just out and £249 - no laser but updated by retired plod !
Anotehr trick is to pay your kids 10p for each camera they spot..or pretend they're in teh car witrh you and you'll slow down anyway.

I like the fact that many car manufacturers (including Porsche) are now offering the option of a built in "coming home function" which will open electric garage doors & also JAM LAZER GUNS! Seems like they can hardly ban these if they are factory fitted when new!?
