944 turbo early help.

I have seen a 1986 tatty 944turbo with 160000miles on the clock.I do not know much about them,ive had a 2.7lux.What bhp are the early ones and what are the main things to look for,i dont mind spending some money over the future months,but dont want to buy a complete dog,it apparently runs reliably,i want to use it for somr running around /trackdays/nurburgring.

* 220bhp standard on '86 models
* Most expensive of all 944's to fix / service
* GET IT INSPECTED!!! Whatever it costs, an inspection will give you the peace of mind to either lay down your cash, or walk away.
* Buy on condition. (1) At that age & mileage FSH can be a red herring, (2) Service Histories can, and often are, forged.
* In all honesty, if it's a track car you're after, go for a 2.5 or 2.7 N/A 8v. Much easier to maintain, cheaper to buy, insure, fix, etc.
£0.02 worth, from personal experience (944 turbo)
Early one are 220bhp.
Some fairly expensive items: clutch, turbo, brakes etc can need replacing
Make sure it's cheap and get an inpection

S2 will have same issues with clutch and brakes + you have got the whole chain/slipper/tensioner/camshaft issue to worry about

The S2 is a great car, and worth buying a decent one for.(speaking from a Turbo owner).
With all cars, check cam belt/ rollers and clutch was doen recently. On the S and S2, check for the cam chain as well- it connects both cam shafts, and the tensioner can fail.
Everything else is pretty easy/ inexpensive to fix, unless you are really unlucky or stupid with your purchase

Sorry but spending 3k on a Porsche really is a joke, if thats all the budget is. Any of these car can sting you for a large sum of money. Clutch can be done for £500 on an S2 and the brakes sorted for £300 easy. If bill like that scare someone then a Porsche is really not the car for them.
I would save a bit till you have atleast £5k you can spend on the car and £1k for a rainy day. Then go out and get a nice S2
As for a 3k turbo, barge and pole come to mind.

Slim I know what you are saying & if its a £3k dead budget then yes stick to a 2.5 lux.
However if the fella is a bit flexible well I've only spent £500 over £3k on any of my 3 944s- Lux, S2 & Turbo & ok we are not talking concourse winners for any of them but all were decent solid cars without stupid mileages (tho the Turbo is highish) & I've certainly seen cars that cost their owners twice as much that were in far worse condition.
Yes there are the major biggies with 944s to look out for, cam tensioner, torque tube bearings,
(*)gearbox/dif, brakes etc, but a clued up buyer can usually steer their way through the mire, but indeed I do agree- buy one with a few bits needing doing that you didnt spot & that £3k car can very rapidly become a £6k one.
(*)Infact my S2 had a pretty knackerd box, but the price was down the approprate amount, it worked ok & I had budgeted for a replacement so my eyes were open.

I looked at this advert a few days ago & thought it would be a good basis for a stripped out track car.
Alternatively, if you're a bit of a DIY'er then reconnolising the front seats, touching in the paint with an airbrush (£20 from Halfrauds) and a full interior valet could transform this into a very good car assuming it's mechanically sound. Several high miler turbos are advertised at higher prices than the £2995 quoted above. The grubbyness could be hiding a very sound car - I have bought several cars in this condition (non-Porsches) and turned them around with a little elbow grease and investment in the right places.
If it's described accurately and an inspection comes up reasonable, it could prove a very good buy.

I have a 993 carrera2 as a main car,the wife uses it mostly(for work!)she is concerned i will wreck it when i take it to the nurburgring at easter,and i have to say that even tho we have the car,we are certainly not rich people,so the thought of trashing it does make you think.
I have been running a nissan200sx s13 for 2 years at track days/nurburgring and remember how good the 944 2.7lux used to run,i even had a lhd 944turbo for a week that i bought and sold a few years ago(when i was more into bikes)i got it for 400quid,all it needed was a set of alloys a track rod end and a small wing repair i cannot believe i sold it(2500)but there you go.
So anyway i am aware of the possible costs,i was just gauging you guys valuable thoughts and experiences,really i need to sell the 200sx,golf gti mk2,and honda cbr600 streetfighter before i buy anything,i have run out of room.
