Good Whisky

Does anyone have a favourite single malt? I'm not terribly experienced in the area of whiskies but am quite fond of Talisker and Macallan. What do you folks think i should head for next. (p.s. under £30, so no 50 year olds please)

I have a bottle of Isle of Jura "Superstition" at the moment that is absolutely fantastic

And Ian Banks' book "Raw Spirit" is brilliant if you're looking for ideas. It's a tour of distilleries, with a bit of philosophy and background to his books thrown in. And as an added bonus he's a bit of a petrolhead too

Would the panel agree that the likes of Jack Daniels, other bourbon and Irish Whiskeys are mostly trash. Winston Churchill certainly said so (a great great aunt of mine was his maid)

best i've had was when on holiday in Loch Lomond recently. Nearby there is a distillery which claims to be the oldest operating. Called Glenturret, the old one was class, but perhaps a bit pricey!

I'm a fan of Bushmills, and Jamesons is the about only blend I'll drink. But I agree re bourbon (with the caveat that I've not tried any good ones (If there are any good ones?))

Ardbeg, Islay malt. Doesn't matter what year to me.
Be warned though, one snifter and you'll be craving a ciggie or a cigar.

The Irish can be very good, especially the 'singles'. The regular Bourbons like JD & JB & WT etc are pretty dire, but there are again some very nice 'singles' but hard to find.

Have you tried Middleton; I believe it's a blend. Power's is not bad either. Agree about Bourbon, sour mash, can't stand the stuff.

Glen Fiddich reserve on the go at the mo, Cardhu, Old Parr and Glen Morangie are faves, not too keen on Laphroaig, too peaty, I'm bit of a thug, I keep mine in the fridge, and add ice and a splash of water to drink it.

I love a Jack n coke when out on the town after a few ales or Guiness's

You cant go wrong with The Macallan - as far as I am concerned, its up there with the very best, despite the cheap price.

Favorite is Lagavulin....then Ardbeg, Bowmore and Laphroaig - Talisker is about the only one I don't particularly care for as it tastes like a tube of Germolene.
Oban is nice because you can taste the salt spray on your lips...
I've tasted most of them...and can only say that Talisker is the one I least like.

Bushmills Single Malt...it is Irish I'm afraid

Bushmills have been on the go since 1608 so should know a thing or two about making the stuff.

I'm only down the road from the distillery so am biased...done the tour a few times..lovely smell...only matched by the smell of a certain car manufacturer in Blackpool.

Edradour, natural cask strength, 59.9% No 150 of 622 kept the bottle.

I have drunk so many and too much but my favouite is Bunnahabhain single malt it's lovely 10/10
