Curious to know if anyone has used Valvoline Vr1 racing 10w/60 on their S54 engine ?
Its not fully synth like Castrol Edge 10w/60
If its just for a routine oil service [circa 1k miles since last change 15 mo ago and oil doesnt look clean any more ] and old man road use low mileage -will it do the job as well ?
My factor is quoting me 40 quid for 6l incl filter for Valvoline cf 70 quid from Opie for Castrol plus filter

Unless you want to start investigating oil in detail and making your own judgements I steer clear of interweb expert views and stick with Edge oil. It's proven and that's hardly an engine you want to experiment on or scrimp on cost.

I'd Stick to Castrol edge 10w 60, if you mess about (and bear in mind how high revving the S54 engine is) you could risk engine damage, also whats £30 in the grand scheme of things? less than 1/2 tank of super unleaded.

Just my thoughts.

Except now BMW themselves put some Shell 10W/60 in instead rather than the Castrol Edge.

Don't do it. Stick to what is recommended for the car, either Castrol 10W60 or Shell Helix Ultra Racing which is what a BMW dealer will be using now.

Even if the car has only done 1k miles the recommended service interval on that car are as per the service indicator for miles or every 2 years, whichever occurs first.
